Note from the Division Head: February 14

Are you wondering how many sixth graders actually have phones? Is your seventh grader constantly telling you that “EVERYONE” is on social media? Get the facts from our Middle School Tech survey! Thanks so much to all of our families who joined us in person or online at last week’s February Parent Partnership meeting to learn more about the results of Matthew Baylor’s Technology survey of our Middle Schoolers. It is really helpful as parents to see this information as context for a larger conversation about Middle Schoolers at OES and how they are engaging with games, social media, and day-to-day use. Matthew will also share a version of this survey with the students to reflect this information back to them, but feel free to let it be a conversation starter at home with your child and family. Here is the Zoom recording of Matthew’s presentation and the slideshow

We hope to see you next month on Tuesday, March 4 for our March Parent Partnership meeting online or in person to hear how students are learning to use respectful language linked to identity. As we know, our students are immersed in the world of online memes, social media, and videos that are often spreading harmful language and stereotypes that are normalized as humor or hate. Our students use this language because they know it is provocative or as a way to test boundaries, often not realizing the impact or meaning of it. Come learn about how we support students to understand this important learning and how you can have conversations with your kids about this.

Remember, you can find all Parent Partnership slideshows and recordings here by going to the Parent Portal–Division Links–MS Parent Partnership Presentations.
