Simon Hatcher ’19: Rowing to Success

Simon Hatcher ’19 attended OES for his full elementary and high school education. He started rowing in sixth grade and, beginning in seventh grade, he trained and competed with the Oregon Rowing Unlimited Club, which had its boathouse at Oaks Park on the Willamette River. As a senior in high school, Hatcher and his double sculling and pairs partner Gus Altucher won events throughout the Northwest. Just a few days before OES graduation in 2019, he and Gus placed third in men's doubles in the U.S. Rowing Youth Nationals.

Simon attended Brown University and rowed throughout his time there. His highlights were representing the United States under-23 national team in the World Championships in the Czech Republic in 2021 and earning a bronze medal in the national collegiate championships in June 2022 with his Brown University boatmates.

He graduated from Brown in May 2024 and is currently attending Cambridge University in England, working towards a master’s degree in nuclear engineering and competing with the Cambridge University Boat Club.

Most recently, his boat, the Cambridge A boat, won the Men’s Championship event (top Men's Eight competition) at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. There were Olympians from all over the world in competitor boats, including one in Simon’s boat.

Here are links to some articles about the event. In any images of the boat, Simon is in the “7 seat,” the second rower from the stern of the boat, wearing a black cap with a green dot.

Simon's father, Peter, who submitted this article, said, “This was a really exciting experience for our son! I wanted to share it in case it was inspiring to OES students and families who may want to consider the sport, or just for classmates to see for fun. My wife Hallie Stosur, Simon’s brother Charlie Hatcher OES ’21, and I are really proud of this guy, who has given so much dedication to his sport.”

Simon shared, “I'm so grateful to my friends, teachers, and mentors at OES for their support in pursuing my passions. Engineering and rowing are all about the confluence between the natural world, technical innovation, and our own human capacities for teamwork and courage. OES helped me realize these connections and become a better collaborator, observer, and thinker.”
