Get to Know Couper Moorhead '05

After graduating from OES in 2005, Couper Moorhead attended Boston University as part of their journalism program, which eventually led him to an internship with the Boston Celtics and later a full-time content position with the Miami Heat. He's been lucky enough to cover six NBA Finals, earn a pair of championship rings with a premier organization, and is enjoying life in South Florida with his wife and two daughters. What elements of your experience at OES did you take into your current career/project?

It's imperative to be a critical and open thinker in the world of journalism, and I've long credited the breadth of my experiences at OES for helping to shape my worldview. People may give me a funny look or two when I describe my Winterims (shouts to Cowboy School in Texas), yet it's likely because I was introduced to such a variety of experiences that I sought a degree across the country in a city with which I had little familiarity.

How would you say OES helped you get to where you are?

I would not say that I came to OES as a freshman with much of an interest in writing, especially from a creative perspective, but somewhere in the midst of my junior and senior years I developed a passion that blossomed into a career. Credit to (Upper School teachers) Lynne Sadler and Diane Herschleb for giving me the confidence to experiment and grow as a writer, while introducing me to a variety of texts I never would have found on my own. While I attended BU for journalism, I had a focus on creative writing and criticism that only came about because of my fondness for the experiences in Lynn and Diane's classrooms.

It's a fortunate thing to be able to arrive at university and know exactly what you want to do with your life, which is itself a thanks to OES, but it's also due to my high-school experience that I've been able to navigate an incredibly fluid, ever-evolving and, at times, rocky industry.

What's your favorite part about doing what you do?

While basketball is my first true love, I also love to write and create and as Manager of Basketball Content with the Heat I'm able to combine both passions each day, enjoying long conversations with athletes and coaches, fostering open lines of communication with fans, telling stories and even applying statistical analysis which nobody would have ever guessed if you check my mathematics grades.

All the best to everyone back in Portland.
