A Conversation with Kara Gaiser ’22

A Conversation with Kara Gaiser ’22

Where are you studying and what is your chosen field of study?
I’m studying at the University of California, Berkeley. I’m a sophomore (class of 2026). I’m majoring in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Aerospace Engineering. I greatly appreciate the broadness of Mechanical Engineering, as I am able to extend my skills to various industries like aerospace, biomedical engineering, materials science, and business.

You recently completed a very exciting internship. Can you tell us more about it?
I have had an incredible experience as an Instrument Electronics Systems Integration and Test Engineer intern at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. I got the opportunity to have hands-on flight hardware experience on major projects like Europa Clipper, the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope (successor to the James Webb Telescope), and multiple low-Earth-orbit satellites. I loved the supportive, passion-driven environment and being able to connect with undergraduate students, graduate researchers, and industry professionals from across the country.

How would you say OES helped you get to where you are so far?
The opportunities that OES exposed me to, like the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and student clubs like the Aerospace Team, have greatly impacted my trajectory to where I am now. The research and aerospace competitions I was encouraged to do while at OES were unique, specialized, and greatly supported thanks to OES’s driven teachers. I still apply the skills I learned through these experiences here at UC Berkeley and in my NASA internship.

What is up next for you?
I am a project lead in an undergraduate research project focused on additive manufacturing and materials sciences here at UC Berkeley, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunities that might unfold. I also have an exciting satellite project in the works. I ultimately plan on diving deep into the various avenues the aerospace industry has to offer throughout my undergraduate education and I intend on getting my master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering after I graduate.

How is your second year of college going?
My second year of college is starting off strong, but very busy. It is currently midterms season so there is a lot of work to do. The work-life balance is definitely much easier now in comparison to last year as an incoming freshman.

What advice would you give current seniors as they prepare for their next steps after OES?
Take time to make memories with your friends, family, and community. The transition to college is exciting, yet busy and exhausting, so make sure to take care of yourself and others throughout this process!
