Oregon Episcopal School - ALWAYS OPEN

All are Invited to Mt. Hood Climb Observance Day: May 14

All are Invited to Mt. Hood Climb Observance Day: May 14

Our school community will gather at the Belltower for our annual Mt. Hood Climb Observance Day on the morning of May 14, 2025. This annual commemoration is in response to the tragic events on Mt. Hood in 1986 that resulted in the deaths of seven students and two faculty members. In addition to the devastating loss of life, several more of the climbers survived but suffered significant physical injuries and emotional trauma. Countless others, especially family members, friends, faculty, and alumni, continue to live with the pain of grief and loss.

We will gather at the Belltower to remember the lives lost and pray for the many who continue to grieve. We seek to honor all the lives impacted and express our gratitude to the Portland community through an embrace of a Season of Commitment, a season we engage in and celebrate actions of love and care that build our vision of a beloved community and stand alongside our Commitment to Justice.

You are warmly invited to participate in our morning Belltower service and to support our ongoing work focused on the Portland community.

Schedule for Wednesday, May 14, 2025:

  • 8:45-9:10 a.m.: Middle School Chapel
Every division has a dedicated Chapel event on this topic during the same week as our Observance Day. This year, the Middle School will be holding its event right before the Belltower service. All those interested are warmly invited to experience how we share this important part of our school's history with our students.

  • 9:15-9:45 a.m. Mount Hood Climb Observance Day Belltower Service
This all-school event unites our school community around the Belltower in solemn observance. The sacred act of remembering reignites our commitment to loving our neighbors through continued acts of service.

  • 10:30-11 a.m. Memorial Eucharist in the Chapel
This service honors the memory of the Mt. Hood Climb through scripture, reflection, prayer, and a celebration of the Eucharist. All are welcome.

We hope you will join us on this important day for our community.
