Students Perform at All-State Music Ensembles

Congratulations to the OES students who participated in the Oregon All-State Ensembles last weekend in Eugene. All-State is an honor music ensemble program run by the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA). All-State has been an annual event in Oregon for more than 60 years. The event brings together elementary, middle, and high school students in choirs, bands, orchestras, and jazz bands to play together, rehearse, and perform with guest conductors.

To apply for a spot, each ensemble must audition. Students must submit an application along with their addition. Selected students and their parents are informed in advance and sent materials to prepare; students are expected to learn their music prior to the event. Vocal Music Teacher Ashley McCullar worked with choir students, Instrumental Music Teacher Hannah Klammer worked with band students, and Advanced Strings Teacher David Eby worked with orchestra students to prepare for their audition and performance. The students who participated were:

Choir

  • Zoe H. ’31, Middle School Soprano Alto Choir
  • Hannah M. ’31, Middle School Soprano Alto Choir
  • Bennett S. ’29, Middle School Tenor Bass Choir

Band

  • Michael G. ’28, High School Wind Ensemble
  • Jacob P. ’26, High School Wind Ensemble

Orchestra

  • Sophia C. ’31, Middle School Orchestra
  • Maxwell G. ’29, Middle School Orchestra
  • Mia S. ’29, Middle School Orchestra
  • Luna W. ’28, High School Orchestra

In addition to playing in the ensemble, three Middle School students held leadership positions in the All-State event. Maxwell G. was the assistant concertmaster, Sophia C. was the principal second violinist, and Mia S. was the cello principal. Advanced Strings Teacher David Eby also participated as all-state coach of the cello section.

Lower School Strings Teacher Angelika Furtwangler said, “This year, Middle School All-State was led by one of the most successful living orchestra teachers and composers, Richard Meyer. How lucky for our students to get to work with him. Great job, everyone!”

Performing Arts Department Director Cameron Jack said, “We’re so proud of our OES musicians who not only work to hone their craft through hours of intentional practice, but fearlessly share their creative expressions through auditions and live performances. It’s a pleasure to see them connecting with musicians from around the state who share the same passion and dedication. A huge thank you to our OES music teachers in our many curricular and extracurricular programs for supporting our musicians, building their skills, and instilling in them a confidence in their individual and collective voice.”
