Student-Scientists Place at State Competition

Congratulations to all of the Upper Schoolers who competed in the state-level science competition, Northwest Science Expo (NWSE), earlier this month. Sixteen student-scientists attended the competition and nine took home awards.

“At NWSE, all 16 OES students showcased their dedication, creativity, and passion for science, representing our school with excellence,” said Upper School Science Teacher Joshua Caditz. “I was delighted to see so many of their projects celebrated with awards by the judges.”

  • Jiaming Z. ’25 won the Naval Excellence in Science and Engineering Award and took second in the Environmental and Earth Sciences category
  • Sadie Y. ’26 won the Women in Engineering Award
  • Evie C. ’26 won a University of Oregon Scholarship
  • Solomon L. ’24 won the Science of Music Award
  • Athena H-C. ’24 placed third in Biochemistry
  • Julia C. ’25 and Adrianna C. ’25 were Honorable Mentions in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category
  • Jesse G. '25 was named Honorable Mention in the Computer Science and Robotics category

“It’s truly inspiring to witness our students fully immersed in the process of scientific inquiry through their own research projects and showcasing their innovative projects at prestigious events like the Oregon State Fair (NWSE) and the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) this year,” Caditz said. “These are wonderful opportunities for them to present their work to professional scientists as well as forge connections with fellow student-scientists, not only from Oregon, but also across the United States and around the globe.”

Next month, Caditz will accompany Lauren T. ’25, Athena H-C. ’24, Diego F. ’25, and Shriya M. ’25 to ISEF in Los Angeles.
