OES was honored to host a unique event on campus recently with the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, The Rt. Rev. Diana Akiyama, and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, The Most Rev. Michael Curry. Bishop Curry was in Portland on an official visit to the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. The Presiding Bishop leads the entire Episcopal Church, which comprises 109 dioceses across 17 countries. This was the first time since 1964 that a Presiding Bishop has been to the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church at OES.
Bishop Curry rose to pop culture status as the priest who officiated at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, with his moving message on the redemptive power of love. OPB’s Morning Edition Anchor Geoff Norcross moderated a discussion between the two Bishops about their path in ministry and leadership, in addition to asking their perspective on challenging topics in Oregon and the world such as racism, gun control, houselessness, and the lingering effects of the pandemic.
