OES Honors Our Planet on Earth Day

This Earth Day, a powerful question spread across campus: What can we do to be caretakers of the Earth? In honor of Earth Day, Lower and Upper School students joined together to reflect on our relationship with the planet we all call home.

One group, led by Isabelle H. ’25 and Lola B. ’25, created colorful chalk art drawings including writing messages of love and care for the Earth. When asked how they could be good stewards of our planet, Anusha P. ’37 shared, “I ask my friend if I can water her plants. And we can play music for plants!”

In the dining hall, Bon Appétit General Manager Jennifer Pack decided to join in on the effort and ran an experiment to collect and measure the amount of combined food waste over a three-day period. After tallying it all up across divisions, she shared that she'd like to get creative and work with the students directly about how to reduce the impact.

Meanwhile, in the Fariss Community Garden, another student group, led by Haris M. ’25, Oliver O. ’25, Sebi K. ’25, and Joe S. ’25, invited Lower School students to plant sunflower seeds in compostable cups—living examples of stewardship that will bloom at home. When asked how they could help the planet, the youngsters answered with beautiful simplicity: “Turn out the lights.” “Pick up trash.”
