By Dr. Gregory Drugan, Upper School Math Teacher and Math Club Coordinator
Each Friday afternoon, the OES Middle School Math Club meets to learn and think about fun math topics and problems. Activities range from timed math exams, to collaborative problem solving, to lessons taught by Upper School students, to the always exciting countdown round with buzzers.
On Saturday, February 8, 12 students from OES competed in the MathCounts Multnomah Chapter Competition. This year, our chapter had around 50 competitors, and OES won the top five places and first place as a team!
Our competitors were: Rayne C. ’31, Kevin C. ’29, Maxwell C. ’30, Sophia C. ’31, Maxwell G. ’29, Lorelei H. ’31, and Tulasi K-R. ’29, Shaarav M. ’30, Anjali N. ’30, Krish P. ’29, Alex S. ’29, and Jessie Z. ’30.
Individual awards were achieved by: Kevin C. (first place), Lorelei H. (second place), Maxwell G. (third place), Maxwell C. (fourth place), and Jessie Z. (fifth place). Countdown Round: Lorelei H. (first place) and Krish P. (second place).
The OES team of Kevin C., Maxwell G., Lorelei H., and Jessie Z. will compete at the MathCounts State Competition in March. Please wish them luck! We will have to wait for all chapters to finish their competitions to know if any of our individual competitors also qualified.
It’s been a wonderful year of Math Club in the Middle School so far, and everyone is always welcome to stop by on Friday after school!
