On April 18, some students took advantage of the long spring weekend by going on a rock climbing trip to Smith Rock, organized by Tom Handel, director of experiential education. Upper School students traditionally go on this spring trip, but for the first time, a Middle School group went as well.
Handel shared, “This was an amazing trip for a first time weekend outing for Middle School. The students worked well together in camp and during the climbing activity to maximize their experience. Students throughout this trip were active and engaged participants and each one of them demonstrated a keen understanding of how to camp and recreate in such a special location without leaving a footprint.”
“For many it was a first time climbing experience and for others it was an opportunity to help others because they were comfortable in that vertical rock environment,” he added.
Ben A. ’30 said, “This was the first time I had ever gone rock climbing outdoors and it ended up being one of the best camping experiences ever! Not only were there breathtaking views, but the climbing was great exercise and I got to spend quality time with my friends and share a great experience with them. Shoutout to Tom Handel and his crew for making this possible.”
