Fourth Graders Honor Favorite Characters at Awards Ceremony

Fourth Graders Honor Favorite Characters at Awards Ceremony

By Michelle Meszaros, Fourth Grade Teacher

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is an exciting reading competition where students dive into a collection of 16 amazing books and work together to test their knowledge and teamwork. This year, our fourth grade class has been focusing on a character unit in reading, exploring the personalities and journeys of the characters in the OBOB books.

To wrap up their learning, the class celebrated on January 9 with the Character Awards. For this event, students wrote persuasive nominations for their favorite book characters, nominating them for superlative awards like “Most Adventurous” and “Most Cruel.” Students then chose their favorite character from the OBOB books, dressed up in costumes, and took on that character's persona, walking the red carpet at the awards ceremony. To make the experience even more fun, they also wrote acceptance speeches that they presented as their chosen character. This was a creative and exciting way to honor the characters they’ve come to know so well throughout their OBOB journey!

The students also voted for best costume in their class. Winners were:

  • Ms. Meszaros’ class: Paige H. ’33, dressed as Olive from Leonard (My Life as a Cat)
  • Mr. Bowman’s class: Blaise H. ’33, dressed as Roz from The Wild Robot
  • Ms. Wainwright’s class: Everly A. ’33, dressed as Marlene from Frizzy

Congratulations to everyone who participated and dressed up! The OBOB Final Battles will be held on Friday.
