Ninth Grade History Students Bring Bygone Civilizations to Life

It's not often you find a free gallery walk in Portland, but that's exactly what OES community members had access to this week in the Upper School. The second annual Gallery Walk Through the Bronze Age featured complex informational posters created by ninth grade history students (like Noah W., Amanda T., and John F., all '20, pictured above).

These posters were visual representations of extensive research and writing done by the student-historians, and covered the characteristics of bygone civilizations like Egypt, Minoan, Maya, and Indus River Valley. Specific components of each poster included the civilizations' religion, social structure, approach to diplomacy, and art/architecture, among others.

Additionally, posters featured QR codes that gallery viewers could scan and be taken to an expanded student essay related to the section in question. Andrew G. reported that he found his project on the Shang Dynasty to be engaging, and remarked, "I thought it was interesting to see what the first people did, and how that shaped dynasties to come."
