A Message from the Division Head
by David Lowell
Last Wednesday was our final Lower School Parent Partnership meeting of the year. The meeting featured Robin O’Hara, Science Department Chair, and Joshua Caditz, Upper School Science Teacher and Aardvark Science Exposition Coordinator, presenting on science inquiry at OES. The second half of the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Jonathan Haidt’s article, End the Phone-Based Childhood Now. Thank you to Lindsay Ford, Lower School Parent Partnership (LSP2) Chair and Joe Leslie-Hurd, LSP2 co-chair, for coordinating another engaging and informative meeting.
Starting on Monday we will begin offering the annual Moving Into Coffees, a time to be introduced to your child’s grade to come. See the table below for the dates and grade levels of the coffees. The coffees are listed in grade level order. Review the schedule below and plan to attend the coffee for the grade that your child will be moving into next fall. Kirstin McAuley, Chris Thompson, grade level teachers and I look forward to sharing our goals for the 2024-25 school year, highlights of the grade level to come and answering your questions.
Each Moving into coffees will be preceded by an informal coffee social from 7:45 - 8:15 in the LS Library.

Class Placement
Each year we create new classroom communities for Lower School students in their new grade. Teachers, student support team members and administrators meet at least five times to review and revise class lists. During these discussions, we review over a dozen attributes of the students and the class in an effort to create well balanced learning communities in each classroom. The final review of class placement occurs in mid-August in case any enrollment changes have occurred over the summer. If you have particular insights about your child that you would like to have considered during the class placement process, please contact Lyn Zenisek by Monday, May 6th to set up an appointment with David Lowell, Head of Lower School.
