As evidenced by its definition, ethics is a complex intersection of rational thought and human behavior. But there was nothing murky or uncertain about how the OES team performed at the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) last weekend.

This year marked the first time the Aardvarks sent a team to the NHSEB, and in a stunning performance the team took second place in the nation! Coached by parent Nancy Keates with assistance from Portland State University faculty and Interim Head of Upper School Corbet Clark, the team consisting of Jack M., Quattro M., Jack C., Vaughan S., and Noah S. (all '18) bested 22 other teams from around the country to finish closely behind the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

The NHSEB, now in its fifth year, was hosted by the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. As the Parr Center shared, "3,924 students from 413 teams competed in regionals from September to March for their chance to participate in the national championship. [At Nationals] students spent the weekend exercising their philosophical and ethical muscles as they analyzed timely and complex ethical dilemmas, including drone warfare, overpopulation, standing up against hateful speech, and social media use."
