Ash Wednesday and the Importance of Reflection

This week, each of the three OES Divisions gathered in the sacred space of the chapel to celebrate Ash Wednesday. In the Christian tradition, this day marks the beginning of the forty days of Lent, an intentional season of reflection, fasting, and service that culminates in the Easter celebration of new life and hope. Every Chapel provided an invitation for community members to come forward and receive either ashes or a blessing.

In the Upper School Chapel, Rabbi Callie Schulman '99 offered that "the season of Lent, which begins today, serves as a bridge . . . ushering us into spring while demanding that we pay attention to the last of the transformative power of winter."

For the Middle School, Chaplain Craig's eighth grade religion class (pictured above) crafted a Chapel that encouraged all present to consider what they might give up, or what they might take on, for the Lenten season. The seventh grade vocal music students, accompanied by Nate S., Francesca F-G., Nicole A., and Ethan T. (all '22) on stringed instruments also gave a beautiful musical gift by performing Kyrie, Eleison.

With the help of Mother Heather Wenrick and Chaplain Jenny Cleveland, our Lower School students continued their tradition of creating colorful "Alleluia" cards in class. In chapel they placed all of these joyful wishes into a large basket--which was then raised into the rafters by first grade teacher Doug Whitmore. There they will remain until the celebration of Easter.
