Middle Schoolers Craft Crepes in Class

What do you suppose a middle schooler's favorite holiday is? Thanksgiving? Halloween? Well, after this week, Jaime O'Dell's French students might have a tougher time choosing. That's because they spent a class period celebrating La Chandeleur, known as France's Crepe Day!

La Chandeleur, which is a Catholic holiday known as Candlemas in other parts of the world, takes place each year on February 2. As part of the traditional celebratory feast, the French enjoy delicious crepes. As Madame O'Dell explained, the holiday serves as a chance for French people (particularly in the province of Brittany, where crepes originated) to shake off the cold and wet winter weather blues.

In this spirit, the young culinary experts helped Madame O'Dell (pictured above with sixth graders, showcasing excellent flipping skills) make the crepes, and then set about topping them with whipped cream, chocolate chips, strawberries, lemon, and baker's sugar. Sounds of delight could be heard around the room as the students finished their very tasty lesson. Everett R. '23 perfectly captured the spirit of the moment with his excited exclamation of, "This is French class! This is my French class today!"
