Fencing at OES

At Oregon Episcopal School, we believe excellence is cultivated through both challenge and community. Our signature fencing and boarding program brings together a premier college-preparatory education, world-class saber instruction through Oregon Fencing Alliance, and a distinctive boarding experience grounded in care, connection, and belonging.

Students train alongside elite coaches with a proven record of developing Olympians and world champions—while thriving in a supportive academic environment that values curiosity, character, and balance. At OES, achievement is never pursued in isolation. Every student is known, supported, and surrounded by a community that believes deeply in their potential—on the strip, in the classroom, and in life.

The Scholar's Edge

The Scholar's Edge is designed for students who aspire to compete at the highest levels—without sacrificing the joy, rigor, and human connection of an exceptional school experience.

Through our partnership with Oregon Fencing Alliance, students receive elite saber training recognized globally for producing Olympic and World Championship athletes. This high-performance pathway is seamlessly integrated into the OES academic and boarding experience, ensuring students grow not only as athletes, but as scholars, leaders, and citizens of character.

What makes OES truly one of a kind is our boarding community—intentionally small, deeply relational, and rooted in care. Here, students find a second home: one that celebrates ambition, supports resilience, and fosters lifelong relationships.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Oregon Fencing Alliance is widely recognized as the most decorated fencing club in United States history, producing more than 70 Olympic and World Championship medals and developing some of the sport’s most accomplished athletes.

Among them is Mariel Zagunis, the most decorated Olympic fencer in United States history and one of the defining figures in modern fencing.

A five-time Olympian (2004–2020), Zagunis captured four Olympic medals, including back-to-back individual sabre gold medals in 2004 and 2008. Her historic victory in Athens made her the first American fencer to win Olympic gold in 100 years, a moment that reshaped the global perception of U.S. fencing.

Her career continued to break barriers. Zagunis went on to:

  • Earn four Olympic medals (2 Gold, 2 Bronze)
  • Compete in five Olympic Games
  • Serve as Team USA flag bearer at the 2012 London Olympics
  • Capture multiple World Championship titles
  • Become the most decorated athlete in USA Fencing history

Her journey began at Oregon Fencing Alliance—where the tradition of excellence she represents continues to shape the next generation of elite athletes.

A Proven Pathway to Elite Competition

The Oregon Fencing Alliance has also produced a remarkable tradition of collegiate success. Dozens of alumni have gone on to compete at the NCAA Division I level, including six NCAA national champions:

  • Seth Kelsey — 2003 NCAA champion
  • Valerie Providenza — 2004 NCAA champion
  • Patrick Ghattas — 2005, 2006, 2007 NCAA champion runner-up
  • Mariel Zagunis — 2006 NCAA champion
  • Sara Borrmann — 2008 NCAA champion
  • Rebecca Ward — 2009, 2011, 2012 NCAA champion
  • Magda Skarbonkiewicz — 2025 NCAA champion
  • Siobhan Sullivan — 2025 NCAA runner-up

Testimonials

Magda Skarbonkiewicz

University of Notre Dame Class of 2028. Five-time cadet and Junior World champion, Pan American champion, and 2024 Olympian.

Fencing at OFA was a very important part of my growth as an athlete, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the experiences I had there. The coaches, the club, and the people around me pushed me every day to work harder and strive to be my best. OES is a great school that truly supports its students both academically and personally, and I couldn’t recommend the program enough.
Vivian Lu ’21

OES Class of 2021. University of Pennsylvania Class of 2025. USA cadet national team.

When I moved to Oregon, the OES and OFA program allowed me to have a community that I will forever be grateful for. The friends I’ve made along the way, who I now stay in touch with, as well as the life skills i’ve learned will stick with me forever. This program truly has made an impact on my life I would never redo.
Patrick Ghattas ’03

OES Class of 2003. University of Notre Dame Class of 2007. 2008 Olympic alternate. Three-time runner up NCAA Champion.

I deeply appreciated my time at OES and OFA. OES provided the high academic standards alongside the flexibility I needed as a competitive fencer representing Team USA. While I always felt challenged in the classroom, the support of the faculty, combined with elite training at OFA, created an environment where I could push myself in both the classroom and the gym. It’s a community that understands how to help a student-athlete succeed and relentlessly pursue their goals without compromise.
Seth Kelsey ’99

OES Class of 1999. Air Force Academy Class of 2003. World Champion, Three-time Olympian, and NCAA Champion.

I cannot imagine a better preparation for both academic and athletic excellence than attending OES and fencing at OFA. OES provided the finest educational experience I have had, with deeply engaged instructors and rigorous coursework. I always felt the school cared deeply about my growth as a human being and prepared me to excel in whatever path I chose. This foundation has served me well throughout my 24-year career in the Air Force, where I continue to serve as an Inspector General. OFA shared that same commitment to excellence, with thoughtful, well-designed practices and highly engaged coaches. My OFA coach, Ed Korfanty, coached me through the 2008 Olympic Games, and I was proud to apply the skills he instilled in me at the highest level of the sport.
Mariel Zagunis

University of Notre Dame 2006 NCAA Champion. Five-time Olympian, Two-time Olympic Champion, and Olympic flag bearer.

From my very first fencing classes at ten years old to my four Olympic medals and fifth Olympic team, Oregon Fencing Alliance has been the epicenter of my fencing career. I’ve trained and competed all over the world and OFA was always the place I preferred to be. Elite level fencing paired with unique opportunities to grow on and off the fencing piste, champions of all kinds have built foundations for success within the walls of OFA.
