Response to Tragedy
A Community Coming Together

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the OES community came together in grief and support. At the same time, people across Portland, throughout Oregon, and from around the country—and the world—reached out with messages, prayers, and acts of compassion. Memorial services, gatherings, and quiet acts of care reflected the deep impact of loss. Together, this collective response revealed the powerful strength of community amidst a period of uncertainty and profound heartbreak.
In the years since, the school has remained in contact with many of the families and survivors, with an ongoing commitment to listen, to learn, and to support those most affected.
OES continues to create opportunities for connection, reflection, and shared remembrance, grounded in the understanding that at its best, community can help carry even the heaviest losses.
Our annual Mount Hood Climb Observance Day is a tradition that gathers our community to pause and reflect on the lasting impact of the tragedy. It is a time when we renew our shared commitment to care for one another and serve others with compassion, as people nationwide cared for the OES community in our greatest moment of need.
Outdoor Risk Management
The Mount Hood climb tragedy prompted immediate actions as well as long-term reflection on outdoor education and student safety.
OES has since established structured systems to support outdoor risk management, including dedicated oversight, regular program review, and the incorporation of evolving best practices in outdoor education. Outdoor education programs are developed in accordance with the school’s Risk Philosophy, and students are taught to identify risk and engage fully in challenging experiences while developing the judgment and awareness needed to responsibly navigate them.
These efforts are grounded in a recognition that meaningful learning experiences must be paired with clear, consistent attention to safety.
Strengthened Outdoor Education Practices
Today, OES outdoor programs are designed and led with a strong emphasis on preparation, training, and adaptability.
Trips are led by trained instructors with relevant certifications in wilderness safety and risk management. Programs are carefully planned in advance while remaining responsive to changing conditions. Students and families receive thorough preparation and extensive gear, and each experience is followed by reflection and evaluation to support continuous improvement. Third-party audits of the Outdoor Education program are periodically conducted to continuously assess and improve safety protocols.
These practices reflect decades of learning and a sustained commitment to student safety.
