Registration Instructions

1. Read this Winterim catalog and discuss the options with your parents and advisor.

2. If you lose your application, print out another application available for download in the menu at the left. Write your first 5 choices on the registration form. Please note: Listing the same course more than once does not increase your chance of getting into that course. To assure your placement in a course in which you are interested it is best to list a variety of courses, including both trips or all day courses and half day courses. If you plan to do Discovery, write that in space #1. Return your form, signed by both a parent and your advisor, to the marked box in the Upper School Office before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30.

• All students must participate in a full-day course, a trip, or two half-day courses. Implicit in the establishment of Winterim is the requirement that all students will complete a satisfactory Winterim for each year they are enrolled in the OES Upper School.

• Seniors may use the Winterim block to complete their Discovery apprenticeship. Seniors who would like to participate in a Winterim course must contract with the Discovery Coordinator (Wendy Steele) to complete their apprenticeship before Winterim or during spring vacation. Seniors who have already completed Discovery are expected to register for Winterim.

• Underclassmen planning to complete Discovery during Winterim 2008 MUST submit their Discovery applications to the Discovery Coordinator (Wendy Steele) by 3:00 pm on Friday, November 16, 2007; that is, before Thanksgiving break.

The Winterim Committee makes every effort to place students in a course(s) indicated to be one of their top choices. It is inevitable, however, that some courses will be over-subscribed. In this case, priority is given to students who have not previously participated in that course or a similar one and by grade level (with seniors given priority.) If none of a student’s choices are available, s/he will be given the opportunity to sign up for any of the courses with available space.

**Mock Trial Team Please Note: The first weekend of Winterim is the state Mock Trial competition. Please keep this in mind as you choose your courses.**

**Science Research Activity Students: March is when the Oregon Junior Academy of Sciences meets. Check the date before signing up to be out of town**

3. Get all required signatures. Please note that the signature of a parent or legal guardian (not a dorm parent) is required on both the registration form and the financial aid form. A faxed copy is sufficient.

4. Financial aid is available for any course, and we encourage students who need assistance with course fees to apply. An application is available for download in the menu at left, and should be handed in with your course preference sheet or directly to the Winterim Coordinator, Hope Stevens, by November 30. You may also pick up a copy in the Upper School Office.

5. Place completed forms in the designated box in the Upper School Office (or hand them in to the Winterim Coordinator, Hope Stevens) between 8:00 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007, and 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2007. It will help everyone if you hand in your form early. If you do not turn in your registration by 3 p.m. on November 30, you will be given the lowest priority for course selection and will be assigned to courses with available space.

6. A student’s participation in any trip may be denied if the Division Head, in consultation with the school counselor and school nurse, feels that the student is not physically or mentally prepared to meet the challenges of the trip and/or may pose a threat to his/her own safety and/or the safety of others.

7. Please note deadlines for deposits and payments. Failure to meet them may result in forfeiture of your place in the course. All fees will be billed directly to each student’s account.

9. Course enrollment will be posted prior to Winter vacation.
