Winterim Priority Rules

Note: We expect that students will be in good standing in all facets of their OES lives when they represent the school on trips. Probation of any sort may cause removal from a trip.

  1. Leaders may indicate an enrollment priority: i.e: gender equity, balanced among the four grades, preference for seniors, etc. These priorities will be public knowledge.
  2. If all other factors are equal, priority will be given by grade, that is: seniors, then juniors, then sophomores, then freshmen,
  3. Priority will go to a student who has not previously received a first choice course over a student who has received a first choice when all other factors are equal.
  4. For trips, priority will go to a student who has never been on a trip or the one on fewer trips.
  5. When all other factors are equal, students will be chosen by lottery.
  6.  Except on extremely small trips (5 or fewer participants), courses will have a minimum of two girls or two boys.  On extremely small trips, if a person is the only boy/girl, that person will always be offered the opportunity to change courses.
  7.  Those students who do not get one of their first five choices in a year will always be offered a choice from the remaining course.
  8. Any student with a late form goes to the bottom of the list.
  9.  Seniors assume the responsibility of completing Discovery before beginning Winterim. If a senior’s plans have not been read and approved by the Discovery Coordinator before the end of First Semester, that senior’s place on a trip may be offered to another student.
  10. When there are more applicants than spots for an International Trip, an application form may be requested.  Obviously the trip leaders and the committee will take into account the contents of the application as well as the above priorities.
