San Francisco: Arts, Culture and Cuisine

Spend a week on “catlike feet” sharing the fog of San Francisco while exploring this great American city renowned for its art and culture. We will roam the city keeping in mind the arts, the culture and the cuisine. We will explore local museums, soak in the sun (or not) at the parks and enjoy the vibe of this major city. Come prepared to walk and explore with a good attitude.
We will observe an ipod moratorium. So leave your ipods at home, because this will be a trip focused on interacting with each other and the community and trying to be immersed in the San Francisco culture.
Trip Leaders: Katrina Perry, and __________
Student Leaders: Natasha Michalowsky and Lia Dawley
Cost: approx. $700, including all meals
Enrollment: 6-8 students

Mt. Bachelor Madness

The students will have the opportunity to alpine ski and snowboard as well as experience an in-depth snow shoe tour along with incorporating techniques for surviving in the elements such as building snow caves, etc.  This trip will provide the students an opportunity to learn, improve and enhance their skiing or snowboarding skills during this week.  They will have the opportunity to take lessons in the activity of their choice and then to practice what they have learned throughout the week.  We will also provide the opportunity for them to trade for the day.  If they are a skier, they can experience snowboarding for the day.  The students will also learn what it means to live and work together as a group.  They will be responsible for helping plan and organize this Winterim, including the planning and shopping for meals as well as the preparation and clean up of those meals.
The goal will be for the students to improve their individual skills as well as experiencing new things they haven’t done before. A tremendous amount of improvement can occur when an individual skis or snowboards on consecutive days such as this week.
This trip will be a physically active trip and the students should be prepared for very full days with intense activity.  It is open to beginners as well as advanced skiers and snow boarders.
The cost of the trip will cover all expenses including:  I have run this Winterim several times now as well as ski trips to Sun Valley, Whistler and Montana.  It has been a huge success each time and a highlight for the students who have participated in it!
Leaders:  Coleen Davis and Rob Orr
Enrollment:  10-12 Students
Dates:  Trip - March 14-20
Cost:   Approx. $800.00 (includes lift tickets, housing, transportation, food, tours and lessons.  The students will only be responsible for rental equipment (if they need it) and any extra snacks or souvenirs they may want.)

Utah Multi-Adventure

This is your opportunity to mountain bike, canyoneer, raft, hike, camp, and provide service on and around the wondrous red rocks of Moab, Utah.  Flying into Salt Lake City we will rent mini vans and drive to Moab to spend seven amazing days and nights.  We will spend some nights in a bunk house on a ranch and some nights camping in Arches National Park (weather depending).  We will rent mountain bikes and ride on the slick rock trails outside of Moab.  We will hike out to the world famous Delicate Arch in Arches National Park and hunt for ancient Puebloan pictographs.  We will raft down a wild and scenic stretch of the Colorado River.  We will rappel into amazing canyons and try a full day of canyoneering.  We will also invest a day providing service for a local government or non-profit organization helping to maintain a clean and natural desert environment around Moab.
Can you say Epic!?

On Assignment: Eastern Oregon

Join us as we head east along the Columbia in one or two minivans with video cameras, digital cameras, digital audio recorders, microphones and several laptop computers to provide us with a portable production studio.  We will ask people the question: what does it mean to be an Oregonian or to live in Oregon.
From the Pendleton—Joseph region we will head south as far as the desert and then head back up by way of Bend back to the Willamette Valley.
We will try to make it back to OES with a completed video documentary to share with the school.  It would be sites and sounds and voices of Oregon along with some narrative written by the students we take with us.
Our role would be to drive, plan a route, arrange accommodations, find some local connections to meet, and teach a little bit about journalism, background research, interviewing, an for me aspects of digital media production.
We imagine staying in small, inexpensive hotels, buying provisions as we go, and generally trying to do the trip as inexpensively as possible so as to keep the costs low.
Timeblock: Trip – March 13 -20.
Leaders: John Holloran and Lynne Sadler
Enrollment: 5- 14
Cost: about $600 if 8 students, less if more sign up.

Join us for exercise, exploration of a beautiful area, fun, and learning about cycling, riding and safety!
