Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? Or, do you know the basics of knitting, but have been afraid to tackle a complicated task or project, such as knitting in the round to make a hat, socks or mittens, or using fancy stitches to make patterned work? Or, are you an experienced knitter who never has the time to work on a demanding and complicated project such as intarsia, beadwork, lace or felting? This course is suitable for all levels of knitters who are serious about enjoying an afternoon every day of working on their skills. We will begin the week with a trip to a yarn shop to select materials for projects, and then spend the afternoon each day sitting in front of a fire in Julie’s living room and knitting together. Beginners will be taught to knit and pearl on straight needles, and will complete a washcloth and their choice of a scarf or fingerless mitts. Intermediate knitters will learn how to knit in the round with circular and double pointed needles, and will make a roll-brim hat and a tote-bag or felted handbag. Advanced knitters will be able to select a project from their own pattern supplies or get advice to select one at the knitting store; Julie will offer support as needed for intermediate and experienced knitters.
Numbers: 5-8 students
Timeblock: Afternoon
Price: varies, depending on student yarn and needle purchases (students will select their own supplies at the yarn store and will either pay in cash or have their OES account charged).
Cost estimate: $30-35 for beginners and intermediate knitters, for needles and yarn for two projects.
Come join the band! We’re going to spend every afternoon learning about, practicing, and playing traditional New Orleans brass band music. This is the kind of music that is played by “second line” bands in Sunday afternoon parades in New Orleans, as well as at “jazz funerals.” The music is loud, fun, and funky. We’ll perform what we’ve learned on Thursday afternoon at the end of Winterim. (And who knows? This could lead to future concerts, as well!) We need trumpeters, trombonists, tuba players, saxophonists, clarinetists, flutists, snare and bass drummers—if you play an instrument, we’ll find a place for you.
Instructors: Adam Steele and Chris Myers
Fee: $15, to cover the costs of purchasing sheet music and recordings.
Timeblock: Afternoon
Enrollment: Open. You must play an instrument. Please list your instrument on registration
Students will create either a self-portrait or a portrait of a friend, family member or even a favorite pet by utilizing digital photography.
