Morning Courses for 2012

Field Hockey

Field hockey is a fast, exciting game of skill that originated in India and is now played around the world. Not to be confused with ice hockey, field hockey is played with a wooden stick and hard ball on grass and all-weather fields or in a gymnasium. Like soccer, a team consists of 11 players with defensive and attacking roles. This is a non-contact sport that can be played with equal skill and effectiveness by high school students of any gender or grade. This is your chance to play and learn the subtleties of one of the world's great games. Each day of this half-day course will start with a warm-up, be followed by a skill and set play demonstration and practice, and end with a full game. It is hoped that games will be played on both a grass field and in a gymnasium, and that the last day will see our group demonstrate its newfound skills in a match against a guest side.

Time: Mornings
Cost: $60 per student for sticks, practice and match balls, and some goalkeeping equipment.

BFF

Balance Flow and Fun is a class designed to improve basic balance and hand-to-eye coordination. The class will involve several activities including slack lining, indo-board, juggling hackey sac and other activities. If the weather permits there will also be some skateboarding (Helmet and skateboards are recommended, I have a few but not a lot) at area skateparks. These types of activities blend nicely into foundations for surfing, skiing and snowboarding, as well as general, overall balance. The Winterim will meet in the mornings.

Enrollment: 8-14
Cost: $35.00

Films You Should Have Seen (But Probably Haven't) II: the '50s

In the 1950s Hollywood and the film industry started making bigger, more epic, splashier (and mostly color) movies. We'll watch and discuss some of the most important films from this period. Possible films include: Singin' in the Rain, All About Eve, Bridge on the River Kwai, Sunset Boulevard, Ben-Hur, Rebel Without a Cause, and On The Waterfront. These are movies that every serious movie-lover needs to know about and have seen. So turn out the lights and roll the film!

Note: This class follows naturally from "Films You Should Have Seen (But Probably Haven't) I: the '30s and '40s" but you do not need to have taken that class to take this class.
