Morning Courses for 2009

Field Hockey

Field hockey is a fast, exciting game of skill that originated in India and is now played around the world. Not to be confused with ice hockey, field hockey is played with a wooden stick and hard ball on grass and all-weather fields or in a gymnasium. Like soccer, a team consists of 11 players with defensive and attacking roles. This is a non-contact sport that can be played with equal skill and effectiveness by high school students of any gender or grade. This is your chance to play and learn the subtleties of one of the world’s great games. Each day of this half-day course will start with a warm-up, be followed by a skill and set play demonstration and practice, and end with a full game. It is hoped that games will be played on both a grass field and in a gymnasium, and that the last day will see our group demonstrate its newfound skills in a match against a guest side.

Cost: $60 per student for sticks, practice and match balls, and some goalkeeping equipment.

Gentle Yoga

Gentle Yoga is designed to be fun and non-competitive and is good for all body types. Our class will include gentle yoga and breathing exercises, stretching and postures, along with discussions of wellness, daily habits, anatomy, and body awareness. Learn how to enjoy the process and develop a sequence you can use anytime and anywhere to keep your body healthy and to help you in your recovery process when you need to heal. Find the areas in your body that can benefit from specific stretches and /or strengthening. In addition, learn how to apply those postures within the framework of our busy lives, when time is limited, in order to keep your body well.
Yoga is a tool for self-awareness. We will listen to the messages the body has to offer for guidance in how far to stretch and how long to stay in a posture. By paying attention to those messages, we can work with our body in Synergy to get the best results. Yoga is also a great tool for increasing strength, flexibility and endurance in other sports.
