Bouldering
Bouldering is the purest form of rock climbing. Traverse a climbing wall or climb a rock without a rope or harness – it's just you and the challenge before you. In this afternoon class, we will spend most of our time at a bouldering gym in Portland; our goal is to climb actual rock in an outdoor setting for at least one class (weather-permitting). We will learn about safety precautions and basic climbing techniques. Our climbs will be no higher than eight feet off the ground; the only equipment you need is climbing shoes (rental), a chalk bag (optional), and a crash pad (to be provided). Bouldering combines a physical workout, a problem-solving task, and the development of one's own mental toughness. Come join us for a unique experience – push yourself outside your comfort zone and try a new challenge.

You will have an opportunity to use a sewing machine to work on a project, such as a small vintage handbag or scarf. A portion of the course will also be focused on learning and applying valuable skills for rescuing and altering vintage clothing to make it more wearable (including basic mending and stitching skills, low-sew alteration strategies, and suggestions for stain removal). Our goal is for you to walk away from Winterim in a completely reconditioned outfit created with your own mind and hands.

Fabulous Found Object Sculpture!
Recycling is more than throwing something in the proper can. See how to use common and oddball objects to make sculpture with Portland artist Bonnie Meltzer. Students will participate in making a sculpture made predominantly of musical instrument and computer parts! Learn the techniques and tools needed for attaching disparate materials so they are structurally sound and aesthetically beautiful. Students will take an active part in some of the design process even thoughthis will be set up like an apprenticeship.
Meltzer has been making sculpture with recycled junk since before the concept was popular. She sees the beauty in ordinary things, especially computer parts and hardware of all kinds. She is currently working on two series; one with globes and the other with musical instruments. Originally from New Jersey, Meltzer came west to get an MFA at the University of Washington and stayed to become an Oregonian. She has exhibited widely in the NW including Maryhill Museum, The Portland Children's Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Craft (Contemporary Crafts Gallery) and Omsi.
