Spirit Week leading up to Homecoming.

News From Jordan Elliott

Greetings parents and friends!  I hope you will join us for the many exciting events on campus during the first weeks of October.  This Friday, October 2, we celebrate Homecoming and Alumnae/i weekend.  I hope to see a great turnout of students, parents, alumnae/i and friends at the girls’ and boys’ soccer games and community fun this Friday.  I also look forward to donning my alumnus hat to celebrate Lou Ann Pickering’s induction into the ranks of honorary alumnae/i.

As I write, we are preparing for our annual Back-to-School Night.  In my mind, this evening wraps up our opening of school events by bringing parents into the excitement of their children’s courses for the year.  We routinely receive positive and enthusiastic feedback from parents after this night of introduction to the courses in the Upper School.  Please feel free to contact me with your feedback.

On October 14 and 15 we will be presenting our second annual Health and Wellness Days, “Octoberim” for short.  Octoberim centralizes activities that affect each of the four grade levels in the Upper School into three days to make for a more efficient use of time, to create a better experience for the students, and to add curriculum that supports healthy living.

Contact Jeanine Rood, (503) 816-8082.

All proceeds from the Book Fair directly support the OES libraries and activities such as reading celebrations, onsite visits from authors/illustrators/cartoonists, as well as reading enrichment programs at Vose Elementary School through the AASK Program.

Books and Breakfast:  Thursday, Oct 22, 8:00-9:30am, OES Dining Hall

STUBBORN TWIG by Lauren Kessler

Life for the Yasui family in Oregon is painfully disrupted at the start of World War II when anti-Japanese sentiments lead to imprisonment, internment and displacement. Please join us to hear author Lauren Kessler share her experiences and perspectives on writing this remarkable and carefully researched book.  Selected by the Oregon Library Association for the “Oregon Reads 2009” community reading program celebrating our state’s sesquicentennial, Stubborn Twig tells the true story of how racism affects the emotions and choices of family members over three generations. Lauren Kessler is a well-published author, national speaker and director of the graduate program in literary journalism at the University of Oregon.

Upcoming Books and Breakfast Titles:

COUNTING COUP by Larry Colton

THE SOLOIST: A LOST DREAM, AN UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP, AND THE REDEMPTIVE POWER OF MUSIC by Steve Lopez

DREAMS FROM MY FATHER: A STORY OF RACE AND INHERITANCE by Barack Obama

Junior Class

Welcome back!  Our first 11th Grade PAL meeting of the year is Monday, October 19 from 8-9:30 am in the Volunteer Room of the Drinkward Center.

We'll hear from our new Class Advisor, Coleen Davis, and the Junior Grade Dean, Deb Walsh.  If you have any questions or topics you'd like to have covered this year, please contact Eileen Pilkenton at 503.297.8548.

Each year the junior parents plan the all-night grad party for the seniors. Annalisa Ferguson has graciously volunteered to coordinate the planning this year ... thank you Annalisa! It's a big project and there are lots of ways to help, both with the planning and with the party itself. If you are interested, please send a note to Eileen and we will add your name to the volunteer list.

Next month, Lauren Kessler will be speaking at the Community Diversity Link 'Books and Beverages' gathering about her book, Stubborn Twig . She is the Director of the Literary Nonfiction Program at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. She will also speak to the Junior class that same morning during X-period. It is a great opportunity for them as they begin working on their Literary Journalism Project this fall. Please see the Community Diversity Link note in this Voice for more information about this book selection and consider joining the 'Books and Beverages' group in the Dining Hall at 8:00 am on October 22 for discussion and to hear from the author.
