Mt. Hood Climb Service Day

News From Jordan Elliott

Spring is upon us in so many ways in the Upper School. The rush of service, curricular, extra-curricular and athletic events that defines May will quickly give way to the celebration of the Class of 2009.

For me, the beginning of our end-of-year events is Mount Hood Climb Service Day. This year’s event marked another wonderful day of service to our community as students from all divisions honored the support OES received in the wake of the tragedy of 1986. Upper School students worked here on campus and throughout the broader Portland community. As usual, group leaders for the projects on campus and in community organizations report that our students were diligent and engaged throughout the day of service. I was particularly proud of the increasing numbers of students that led projects for the day. In fact, students were the organizers, primary contacts, and leaders for ten of our service events. Special thanks are in order for all those who organized the day and for Robin Schauffler, US Service Learning Coordinator, in particular. This day would not be nearly as successful without her tireless efforts.

This year’s Commencement Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 11 at 7:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (147 NW 14th Avenue in Portland). We ask that all students in grades 9-11 attend the celebration of the Class of 2009 and preview the traditions that will accompany their graduation from OES. In preparation for this event, we will take the entire student body to Trinity for a practice during the day on Thursday, June 11. School will begin at 9:00 am that day. In the afternoon, all students are expected to attend the Awards Ceremony where departmental and Upper School Awards will be presented. Students in grades 9-11 will then be expected to be at Trinity by 7:00 pm and the ceremony usually concludes by 9 or 9:30 pm. Parking in NW Portland is notoriously difficult at this time of year so we suggest that you communicate with your children via cell phone to arrange pick-up when Commencement concludes.

MBS Buyback Program (New)

MBS Direct has begun the quote process for the book buyback program. To get a get a quote from MBS log onto the MBS Direct website and click on “Sell my books.” In an effort to be more sustainable and efficient, MBS is again offering on-campus drop off for their buyback program. US Families with a printed buy-back quote can drop off books at OES on June 10. Save time, energy, and resources by not having to package and ship books to MBS. Please look for more information about this program in future school communications. We are still looking for a few parent volunteers on the day of the drop off. If you are interested in helping, please contact Deri Bash .

Annual Fund (New)

A huge thank you to all of the Parent Fund volunteers who made calls, wrote notes, intercepted parents on the walkways, stuffed mailings, and got the word out about the Annual Fund.

Special thanks to Division Chairs: Eileen Pilkenton, Gary Rischitelli, Megan Bingham, and Michelle Fitzhenry.

And hats off to Tricia Sipowicz for her work on communications.

We’re just 10 parent donations short of meeting our participation from last year which is tremendous in what are challenging times.  Bravo!

Also thanks to Margarett Kahl, Susie Gundle, Sam Pollack, and Marianne Johnson for their unflagging support. Ann C. Carter, 503-248-6759

FRIDAY, MAY 22 is the deadline for seniors to turn in completed Service Learning hours--or an hour-by-hour plan for completing them by graduation, signed by a service supervisor, and approved by Robin. Winterim 2010 (March 11-18) (New)

The student-faculty Winterim Committee is working on “Big Trips” for Winterim 2010. Big Trips are usually international, cost more than $1400.00 and usually use part or all of Spring Vacation. We will announce these trips in late May. Because your children may not inform you of the options at this busy time of year, we will insert a flyer with the final grades. Please read it and discuss it with your student. We announce trip options at the beginning of the summer especially so families can plan (most trips include part or all of Spring Vacation), set aside the cost, and so students can earn part of the cost. Final sign up is before the end of September. Please note: We try to ensure that every student who applies for a Big Trip, goes on one in high school. Should a trip be over-subscribed, and all other factors are equal, preference will go to the student who has never been on a trip.

(check the link: http://www.oes.edu/winterim/priority.html for a more complete list of priority options). Note also that Financial Aid is available on need basis for all Winterim Courses. Students who need aid for a trip may apply by Thursday, June 11, 2009 or at the same time as they register for the trip. See the link: http://www.oes.edu/winterim/financial_aid.pdf for the Financial Aid application. Financial Aid for Big Trips is almost always awarded on a one time basis. Look for the summer brochure with end of the year grades! Have a wonderful summer! Hope Stevens , Winterim Coordinator, 603-416-9309

OES Summer Programs (New)

There are still many exciting opportunities to take this summer at OES. From Sue Jensen’s Sunburst Art to 3-D Modeling and Animation with David Gomes, there is truly something for everyone. Drivers Education and PSAT/SAT/Study Skills with Larry Krieger both have openings, along with several writing classes. Lacrosse, Basketball, Personal Finance, and volunteering as a Jr. Counselor help round out a summer of fun and learning.

Make your doctor appointments early!

All 9th, 11th, and all new students for the 2009-10 school year will need a physical and a sports pre-participation form completed by parents and their physicians before school begins in the fall.

College Counseling

Next year’s pre-college testing dates to put on your calendar: Rising sophomores and juniors are scheduled to take the PSAT Wednesday,

October 14.  There’s no need to register; we automatically order tests for everyone in both classes.  Rising seniors (and later in the year, the juniors) do need to register individually to take the SATs.  You can now register online for next year’s tests.  (www.collegeboard.com). Both tests (the Reasoning Test and the Subject Tests) are given October 10, November 7, December 5, and January 23.  (Remember, you can’t do them both on the same day!)  The College Board web site also has options for test preparation.

A reminder to all students and parents that there is an abundance of college search and admission information available on the web.  Take advantage of the links on the OES College Counseling home page (click first on Academics, Upper School).  At this time of year, juniors should be doing college searches and checking our college home pages; there is a parents’ corner you can check out.  The web has certainly made all sorts of college selection resources readily available.  Happy surfing!  (The OES College Admissions Handbook is also available online.)
