I hope that all of our OES families had a restful Thanksgiving and wish everyone the best for the upcoming Winter Vacation.
The
academic work for the 2008 calendar year will come to a close with
final exams on December 17-19. The schedule for final exams
follows below. The nature of your child(ren)’s final exams will
vary depending on their grade, course, and other factors. Please
discuss your child(ren)’s final exam schedule with them and feel free
to contact teachers or advisors if you have any questions or
concerns. As in past years, we will be offering students the
privilege of leaving campus during lunch between exams. For
non-seniors this privilege will only be allowed if your child(ren)
picks up the permission form from the US office, has it signed by a
parent, and returns it to the US office. Please keep your eye on
eGathering for other announcements about final exams.

St. Nick Chapel |
St.
Nick’s Chapel is the final event before Winter Break. Upper
School students are required to be a part of this all-school
celebration, so please make every effort to have your child(ren) attend.
As
I mentioned in previous messages, the Upper and Middle school faculty
are working on a joint project to review the daily schedule in both
divisions. On Monday, December 1, we invited Dr. Mollie Galloway,
a professor at Lewis & Clark College and a member of an
organization called Challenge Success, to meet with the Upper and
Middle school faculty. I encourage you to take a look at the
website for this organization for some information on the nature of
this presentation: www.challengesuccess.org. I look forward to more discussion with parents about our schedule review at PAL meetings in 2009.
Finally,
we have invited four finalists for the Director of College Counseling
search to campus this December. I would like to publicly thank
our PAL reps from grades 6-12 for participating in the interview
process. We hope to wrap up the search and announce our new
Director early in 2009.

Technology
being what it is, occasionally parents report that they are not
receiving email from the school. Here is a tip that may help: check
your Junk email folder and the email quarantine from your service
provider.
Since
everyone would like to eliminate unwanted emails most services provide
an automatic email “spam” filter. One of the most common problems is
that they will determine that bulk email sent from OES may be “spam”
and they will put it into a “quarantine” area for you to check
manually. Your own email program on your computer might also send
bulk email directly into the “Junk” email folder. We send a lot of bulk
email so it’s a good idea to check the Junk email folder if you think
there may be a problem. Most systems, whether it is your internet
provider or your own email program on your computer hard drive, will
allow you to set a filter that will make sure mail from our domain
(oes.edu) always gets through to your inbox.
Below are some links for three of our most common providers of web email. For others, please contact your provider directly.
Gmail - http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6579&hl=en
Comcast – http://help.comcast.net/ and type “enable spam filtering” in the search bar.
EasyStreet - http://easystreet.com/for_it_pros/email_services/anti-spam_anti-virus/anti-spam_anti-virus_faq/.
Our goal is to make sure we can keep in touch. For additional information concerning email from OES you can contact me (

A
Progress Report: The seniors are working their way through the college
application process. Twenty-four, almost a third of the class,
applied Early Decision, a choice which requires a commitment (and
withdrawal of other applications) if they are admitted. They should be
getting responses to their applications before the holidays. An
additional twenty-three applied Early Action, which does not require a
commitment. They will be hearing soon as well. A handful of seniors
have already received acceptances from colleges that do rolling
admission, mainly state system schools.

Books & Breakfast: THE LARAMIE PROJECT by Moises Kaufman
Friday, Dec. 12, 8:00-9:30am, OES Dining Hall
One
month after the murder of university student Matthew Shepard in 1998,
Moises Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project
traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to interview the people of this small
town. The playwrights created The Laramie Project based
upon their year-long collection of interviews, published news reports
and journal entries. Please join us to discuss this
uniquely-constructed play in which a diversity of voices reveals
differing thoughts and feelings of people grappling with the meaning of
a tragic event in their midst. US teacher Katrina Perry will set
the scene for our small group discussions by opening our meeting with a
description of the landscape and inhabitants of her hometown of
Laramie. Play script books are available for check out from
Arleene at the main reception desk or from the US library.
Future Books and Breakfast Discussion Meetings and Titles:
February 6: THE LAST CHINESE CHEF by Nicole Mones
March 6: THE MEMORY KEEPER’S DAUGHTER by Kim Edwards
May 1: THERE IS NO ME WITHOUT YOU by Melissa Fay Greene
Coming in February: CDL Town Hall Meeting about the OES Upper School Production of The Laramie Project in Spring 2009.

AASK
tutors are in 8th – 12th grade and go to Vose Elementary every Tuesday
and Thursday, and Whitford Middle School on Wednesday to help younger
students in reading, writing and math. Most students are native Spanish
speakers, and if you have ever had all of your school day in a language
different than your own, you know how much work it is! Vose has fewer
resources than students at OES do to get extra help with work. Their
high school buddies really make a difference! Get some great service
learning hours, have fun, and make a difference in a child’s success in
school! The friendships with your young students are ones you will
always remember!
