Physical Education

Every student must be involved in an approved physical activity at least one semester each year. The term “physical activity” is used to mean an OES PE class, an OES sport, or a physical activity outside of school that has been pre-approved by the PE Department.

SPECIFIC GRADE PE REQUIREMENTS
All Ninth Graders are required to take one semester of the required course, Introduction to Fitness and Health. During the other semester they must be in a physical activity.

All Tenth Graders must be involved in a “physical activity” both semesters. (In addition, students must take one semester of PE sometime during their Tenth, Eleventh or Twelfth Grade years).

Eleventh and Twelfth Grade students must be in a physical activity one semester each year.

Course Descriptions

INTRODUCTION TO FITNESS AND HEALTH
This Health course focuses on the physiological aspects of health. Topics include physiology and exercise, cardiovascular diseases, fitness/health assessment, nutrition, and self-management strategies. This course also includes a short review of relationships, birth control, and STI awareness. (F)(S)

LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY
Life in the Community is a semester long Health course that is one of the graduation requirements from our PE curriculum. The main goal of this course is to introduce and discuss essential skills for personal growth and wellness in an efficient and developmentally appropriate way. It is our hope that the experiences in this course will enhance each student’s physical, social, emotional, and spiritual wellness. In this course, students will be given many opportunities to cultivate their personal responsibility to empower each of them to face the challenges of life in the many communities they are a part of. Through reflection exercises, students will be asked to surface the implicit values of the OES community and work to find their place in this system of values. This course is graded pass or no-pass.

WEIGHT TRAINING/CONDITIONING
Weight training is offered for students who wish to increase their total body strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. The first few weeks will include written information about workout progression and techniques of weight training. Weeks six through nine include group weight training and conditioning followed by nine weeks of individual programs. Objectives of this course include learning and demonstrating basic lifting techniques, knowing the muscle groups involved, learning about various weight-training programs, designing individual programs, and attaining a better level of muscle development. TEAM SPORTS
This course will cover a wide variety of team sports. We will play many common team sports such as; soccer, softball, basketball and volleyball as well as many less common sports such as; floor hockey, McWhippet, ultimate Frisbee and speedball. The students will learn the basic skills, rules and strategies for each game. Each class will begin with a warm up fitness routine, followed by game play in each sport. The students will gain an appreciation and understanding of what being a team player means and will incorporate this skill in class on a daily basis. Each student will also understand and appreciate the importance of incorporating physical activity in their daily lives. This class will provide the students with an opportunity for incorporating physical activity into their daily schedule. (F)(S)

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
This course will cover a wide variety of individual sports and activities such as; badminton, tennis, pickleball, yoga and other life long activities. They will learn the basic, skills, rules and strategies for each sport or activity. The students will cover these units over a 3 week period each and will be able to gain a high level of proficiency in each activity. Each class will begin with a warm-up fitness routine. The students will understand and appreciate the importance of incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. They will be introduced to many life long activities as well as learning how to interact with their peers in competitive situations. (F)(S)

INTRODUCTION TO DANCE
The first few weeks will be spent in self discovery as we explore the makeup and mechanics of the human body.  We will be seeking to answer the question "What is Dance?"  This Class will cover basic technique and terminology for a variety of traditional dance styles including, Tap, Jazz, and Ballet.  Students will also be exposed to the history of dance as we investigate some of the movers, shakers, and most influential persons in the dance world.  Some partner work or Ballroom styles may be introduced depending on student interest. Students may designate whether the course will count for art credit, PE credit, or activity credit.
