The Upper School program at OES is designed to
give students the information, skill, and experiences necessary
to prepare them to live in, and contribute to, our increasingly
multicultural, technological, and personally challenging world.
With a passion and preparation equal to the challenge of our
curriculum, Upper School students fulfill our graduation requirements
while still leaving time for advanced work in areas of individual
interest. Electives complement the core requirements, and in addition
to honors level courses, independent research opportunities are
also available. Students learn the value and reward of hard work
at OES, and they find themselves motivated and challenged as they
prepare for admission to colleges, and for life.
We offer traditional and unique courses in the Upper School.
The team-taught Ninth Grade humanities course combines English
and history by introducing a cross-cultural exploration of ancient
world peoples. The science program is designed to provide acceleration,
inspiration and enrichment for interested, talented, and motivated
students and includes a strong research component. Though not
required, it is common to find OES students taking fourth- and
fifth-year foreign language courses and doing college-level work
in various disciplines.
Afternoon sports, music rehearsals, performances and special
workshops allow students and teachers to grow and learn together.
The daily schedule also provides time for student/teacher conferences,
special help sessions, large community gatherings, or just casual
conversations.
