Digital Animation & Game Design Workshop

Do you want to explore the digital art of animation and game design? Do you have ideas that would make a fun and challenging game? Have you played around with Scratch or GameStar Mechanic, and would you like to learn more about the programming scripts? Whether you are new or old to using digital tools for animation and game design, this workshop offers the time, space, and creative energy to extend your thinking. We will also explore old-school animation and game design using flipbooks and board games. Together we will build our knowledge of systems and design to create original and remixed projects that reflect our own personality and style.

Digital Filmmaking

Lights, Camera, Action! Learn the basics of planning, shooting, and editing digital video using DV cameras, iMovie, and iDVD. Students create their own commercial, short documentary, and scary film, as well as a final project of their own choosing. Students will work in production groups.

3D Modeling & Animation

Learn how to create the dazzling effects of Hollywood movies. We will be working with Maya, which has been used to create special effects and animations in movies such as Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean. Students will work individually to create original projects that they will present to the rest of the class and take home on CD.

Film Making

These days you don't need a million-dollar budget and a big-name star to make a movie; all you need is some basic equipment, a healthy dose of imagination, and a few friends willing to play along. This class is designed to introduce and put into practice the basic elements of filmmaking: script writing, planning, shooting and digital editing. Students will work collaboratively to produce a short film from the initial idea stage to the final screening, and they will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be both in front of and behind the lens. Game Maker: Introduction
Mozek Games
Do you want to develop computer games without spending countless hours learning how to become a programmer? You’ve come to the right place. Gamemaker allows you to make exciting computer games without the need to write a single line of code. In this class we get started making a Pong type game and students build their own renditions of Breakout, Space Invaders and other classic video games. Go home with your games and software to let you keep building!

Game Maker: Intermediate
Mozek Games
Must have completed the introduction class or have some knowledge of Gamemaker. Continue developing classic video game equivalents of Pacman, 1942, and Zelda. Then build some new games styles of the Tower Defense type. Break into the Gamemaker GML language and start writing code. Go home with game build challenge documents and software to build all of the challenges.

Puppet Creations in a Digital World Cancelled

The art of puppetry seems to have been overshadowed by digital animation and computer graphics. Now it’s time that the puppets made a stand! This class will explore the classic art and craft of puppetry as well as utilize current technology to help bring it to life. Students will build their own characters using a variety of sculptural materials and techniques and then work together to create stories and scripts. Using digital cameras and green screen technology, students will capture and enhance their puppet’s performances. Video editing equipment will be used to sequence stories and
add backgrounds, voice-overs, music, and titles.

Scratch Programming: Drag and Drop, Introductory programming
Mozek Games
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web. As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.

Stop Animation
Cameron Jack
Learn the art of animation in a collaborative, creative, and fun environment. In this class, students will work in groups to create action sequences using a variety of 2D and 3D sources. Students will script stories and use cameras to capture footage. Basic movie making will be introduced as students learn to manipulate video editing software. Voiceover work will be done and music making software will be utilized to add levels of complexity to the animations. Software: iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Reason. Hardware: Flip cameras, Midi keyboards

Stop Motion Animation
Mozek Games
Students will use Stop Motion animation software and video cameras to make time-lapse photography and their own video creations. Kids' video creations will be uploaded to a secure website where students and parents can enjoy their creations for months afterwards.

- Add narration or import audio files to your own video creation
- Use time-lapse functionality to speed up slow processes
- Reverse the order to make the impossible happen
- Add text and titles to let your viewers know what is happening
- Share your movie with the world by posting it to the web
