Tsunami Bracelet Project

OES Responds to Tsunami with an Open Heart

As a symbol of unity and compassion, the OES community created bracelets to raise funds to help with the tsunami relief efforts in South Asia. These
simple bracelets, three beads tied on to a black cord, symbolically show our compassion as a community for the victims and survivors of this awful tragedy.

The black bead is for mourning and remembrance, followed by a golden bead which symbolizes compassion for the survivors and their families,
and a clear bead which stands for hope and cooperation as communities, corporations, schools, churches and nations set aside their normal
activities in order to be of assistance.

Catching a glance at the bracelet can serve as a powerful reminder that while our lives move forward in predictable ways, the lives of many
have been changed forever.

By the end of January, thousands of bracelets had been made and more than $10,000 had been collected and donated to Mercy Corps, UNICEF, and Episcopal Relief and Development, all of which are assisting people made homeless by the tsunami.

This project became a powerful opportunity for our students from pre-kindergarten to seniors to realize their power for good as citizens of local and world communities.

Where in the World are the Tsunami Relief Bracelets?
OES students started to chart the travel of the Tsunami Relief Bracelets around the world by marking them on a large map in the Lower School Library. Please let us know where your Tsunami Relief Bracelets are serving as a powerful reminder and symbol of mourning, remembrance, compassion, hope and cooperation.
