OES conducts special programs for students at
all levels, including activities after school, on weekends, and
during summer. Below are brief descriptions of these programs.
The Aardvark Science Exposition is a science, engineering, computer
science and math research competition for OES students in the
Middle and Upper Schools. Students with their research poster
boards are interviewed by professional judges and celebrated at
our evening awards ceremony.
Aardvarks Advocate Skills and Knowledge is a program with the
OES sister school, Vose Elementary, in which students from both
schools develop their academic and leadership skills.
The wide range of after school classes at OES includes art, music, science, sports, and writing. Registration forms and class descriptions are sent home in September and January. Classes run October through January and February through May. A completed registration form will secure your child a spot on a first come, first serve basis. The Business Office bills student accounts for the classes.
Discovery is a five-day, 40-hour apprenticeship required of all students at OES. It is an opportunity for students to explore a particular area of interest, to experience the demands and structure of the “working world,” and to learn, through a guided process, to create their own educational experiences outside the classroom. Students are directly responsible for developing their own apprenticeships. They must identify a sponsor within a host organization, create a working agreement with a sponsor, complete an evaluation with their sponsor, and write a five-page paper about their experience. All apprenticeships must be approved in advance by Wendy Steele, Discovery Coordinator.
Middle and Upper School students participate in an exchange program
with a school in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Upper School students
may participate in a French
exchange program with the Externat Sainte-Marie in La Verpillière,
France. The Japanese program also offers exchange opportunities
for students.
OES offers a broad program of vocal and instrumental music throughout
the divisions.
OES offers on-campus activities and trips that feature backpacking,
rafting, skiing and other pursuits.
OES students learn about their obligation to contribute to the
betterment of our community through active participation in thoughtfully
organized volunteer experiences.
OES offers a wide variety of summer programs. They are open to
the public. The programs are designed for people from preschool
age through adults.
Upper School students set aside six days just before Spring vacation
to experience intensive learning in settings and contexts that
are different from their normal school lives.
