MS Homecoming Volunteers

Job description: Volunteers assist with MS specific homecoming activities in advance of the celebration and/or at the event by helping set-up, running the parade and fun-food booths (popcorn, etc.), and cleaning-up after the afternoon/early evening festivities.

Homecoming is an annual all-school celebration including soccer games, food, and fun for all. Current families and alumni are all invited to attend. Dinner is provided by OES food service.

MS Science Research

Time of year: 7th and 8th grade are in January, 6th grade is in April

Job description: Volunteers supervise students during science research work days.

MS Teacher Appreciation Snacks

Time of year: throughout year

Job description: Volunteers provide snacks for teachers on selected days and during Middle School student conference days.

Snacks may be homemade or store-bought.

MS Teacher Appreciation Luncheon

Time of year: late Winter/early Spring
Time of day: school hours for event, discretionary for food providers

Time commitment: 2 hours
Location: on campus for event, at home for food providers

Job description: Volunteers help with the set-up, serving and clean-up of luncheon. Volunteers also provide food for the buffet lunch.

This event is provides teachers the chance to enjoy a luncheon of homemade food while visiting with fellow teachers. The chair selects a theme for the event. Food items are typically consistent with the theme and include appetizers, entrees and desserts.

MS Science Research - 6th Grade Judges

Job description: Volunteers interview student teams and critique the science projects of 6th graders.

MS 8th Grade Graduation Party

Job description: Volunteers plan and put on this end of year celebration of 8th grade promotion. Duties vary depending on venue and activity.

The 8th Grade Graduation Party is a celebration that occurs in conjunction with the end-of-year MS closing exercises. The event chairs work with a Middle School head to decide the activities that will take place. Activities can vary year to year. The chairs work with committee members to plan event. Committee opportunities could include theme development, food, entertainment, decorations (setup/cleanup), and slide show generation. Event volunteers work the day of the event.

MS Library Volunteers

Job description: Volunteers work under the supervision of the Middle School library staff to process books, shelve books, "read"/cleanup shelves, and set-up book displays.

PAL Meeting Minutes Scribe

Job description: Take minutes during the monthly PAL meetings. Review with 8th grade PAL rep and post to PCL webpage.

MS Service Learning - Advisory Driving

Location: meet at Middle School, drive off campus

Job description: Volunteers drive MS students and faculty to Portland area non-profit agencies where students perform service projects during the lunch hour. Drivers must complete an OES driving certification class which includes a DMV check.

Volunteer requirements include DMV verification of your driving record and attending a 2 hour driving class provided by the OES Facilities Director in early fall. Certification is good for 3 years. Volunteers drive a single advisory and their advisor to a grade specific service learning project. Each advisory goes twice during the year for 2 hours from approximately 11 am to 1 pm. Trips are made over the course of the school year. Up to 2 volunteers may be needed for each trip.

MS Service Learning Driving (All MS)

Job description: Volunteers drive MS students and faculty to Portland area non-profit agencies where students perform service projects. This is one of the few MS volunteer opportunities where you can work directly with students. Service learning requires about 50 drivers for each service learning day.

Volunteer requirements include DMV verification of your driving record and attending a 2 hour driving class provided by the OES Facilities Director in early fall. Certification is good for 3 years. Volunteers must also have an OES approved background check (Sterling or DHS).

MS Sports Team Parent - Please contact your child’s coach

Job description: Assist coaches with communications and other organizational aspects of the team. Specific duties will depend upon coach.

  • Fall sports include boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country.
  • Winter sports include boys and girls basketball
  • Spring sports include boys and girls track, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls tennis

Job description: Assist with various tasks needed by the coach and/or team parent. Tasks will vary by coach and team. They might include keeping stats or the game book, running the scoreboard, acting as a line judge or providing snacks.

Due to the number of teams fielded each season it is not possible for OES to fully staff each game/competition. Parent help is critical to running each event.
