The wetlands with their morning mists and flocks of ducks and geese give the OES campus its distinctive pastoral feel. Students cherish the wetlands, which they visit from the time they are in Pre-Kindergarten. The beauty of the marsh inspires poetry, its flora and fauna are a textbook for nature study, and its role in the ecosystem is a subject of study by budding environmental scientists. Students monitor the water quality, replace invasive species with native plants, and improve the habitat for wildlife. A major restoration project in 2004 improved aquatic habitat and made the marsh more effective in preventing downstream flooding.
