"Oh My Gods" Play Unites Power for Good and Greek Pantheon


Often times Greek mythology involves gods and goddesses causing great amounts of various types of trouble. But not so for the fifth graders in Ms. Akehurst's class! Yesterday and today these thespians delivered performances of Oh My Gods, a student-crafted play.

Here's the 411 on how this colorful and community-driven production came to be, as shared by Ms. Akehurst herself:

"This week saw the conclusion of our two-month long class endeavor of writing and creating the theatrical production Oh My Gods. We began with the question, 'What are all the ways we can tell stories?' From there we brainstormed, drafted, researched, and collaborated our way through creating a new story about the mythological Greek gods and goddesses. The students reflected deeply to find the heart of our story, and made sure it carried the message they wanted to extend to our audience.

This opening question led us to imagine what a play might look like if it included a storytelling quilt. In collaboration with our Lower School Art Teacher Margaret Synan-Russell, the fifth graders embroidered, appliquéd, and painted a multi-media quilt that represented the disputed power of all the emotions in the human experience. In our conclusion, the Greek gods and goddesses gift the powerful quilt to us in the mortal world, leaving us with the provocation: 'Let the gods' battle be a lesson to you. Listen to your hearts and find the truth in using your power for good. For every emotion of anger and frustration, there is an equal and opposite emotion of love and kindness. Which do you choose to use?'
