Lower School Philosophy Statement

Our mission is to help students become competent, confident lifelong learners who are responsible, contributing citizens to the communities and diverse world in which they live.

We believe children will need a strong foundation in basic academic skills. Curiosity, eagerness to learn, capability for self-direction, and self-confidence to persevere, create, and make decisions are equally essential to the learning process.

We recognize the values of respect, responsibility, and compassion as guiding principles for our school community.

To accomplish our mission, we strive to provide the following:

  • Education of the whole child, with a balance of emphasis on academic, social, physical, aesthetic, and spiritual growth.

  • Interdisciplinary, theme-based curriculum to help children see connections between what they are learning and the real world, and in which process and skill development are as important as content.

  • Instruction in the use of technology so that children can access and communicate information effectively, confidently, and responsibly. • A program which is challenging, yet sensitive to the needs of individual students.

  • Active, experiential learning that is developmentally appropriate at each grade level.

  • Encouragement for students to ask questions, take risks, be creative, and make wise choices and decisions.

  • Creative problem solving, including problems with multiple solutions and those with no clear solutions.

  • Opportunities for children to work in cooperative learning teams as well as independently.

  • Student participation in a variety of service learning projects.

  • A partnership of students, teachers, and parents working together to provide a safe and nurturing environment, which provides support in times of struggle and celebrates success.
