Student discipline at OES relies heavily on proper classroom management. This includes established routines, careful explanations of what is expected of the students, positive reinforcement of appropriate behavior, a lot of warm interaction with students, and consistency among all faculty and staff on appropriate student behavior.
Proper behavior is based on the guidelines of respect, responsibility, compassion, sense of community, and the safety of the children. Consequences for inappropriate behavior are usually handled by the teacher, but if there is a severe individual incident or a recurring pattern, the Lower School Head or Assistant Head may become involved. Since there is such a wide range of ages in the Lower School, consequences may vary, but there will be little tolerance for any behavior which threatens the emotional or physical safety of any child. The School attempts to work with parents on plans that can be instituted within the school day, but if the situation is serious enough, a child may be sent home.
Any behavior which may be deemed detrimental to Oregon Episcopal School, to the OES community, to any member of that community (self or others), or to the spirit of that community is subject to disciplinary action. The action taken will necessarily reflect the seriousness of the violation. Student discipline policies are reviewed annually and updated as needed.
A Computer Use Policy with sanctions for irresponsible use of technology is in effect. We view the use of the internet as a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in loss of access for a specified period of time. In addition, other disciplinary action may be determined in line with the violation. Students and parents in Grades 2–5 are required to sign an Acceptable Use Policy form. All students are given instruction on responsible use of technology. Please see the Computer Use Policy Computer Use Policy in the All School section of this handbook.
