Assigning students to classes is an important job for any faculty. Getting the right mix of children means that many factors must be considered. At OES, where we have more than one self-contained classroom at each grade level, we try to maintain homogeneous classes which have a balance of boys and girls. We consider both individual and collective needs and want to promote good relationships among the children. We have confidence in all our teachers and think that most children will do well with any of them.
Grade level teachers meet in May or June to group returning students and tentatively assign them to classes. These assignments are reviewed in August as summer enrollments are added. Parents are informed of their child’s classroom assignment via an August mailing which contains all the information about the opening of school.
There are times when we are genuinely unaware of information from home that should be considered in class placements. Parents who have information they think would be useful should make an appointment with the Head of Lower School. Parental input is weighed along with such factors as academic ability, classroom deportment, and maturity. After weighing all available information, it is the School’s job to make the final decision.
