RECREATION ADVENTURE CAMPS

THE FOLLOWING ARE 5 ONE-DAY ADVENTURES, LED BY JEFFRY GOTTFRIED AND ERA-

The following adventure camps are open to students and their parents.

Jeffry Gottfried has his Ph.D. and more than 30 years of experience as a science and environmental educator. He has been teaching classes locally for OES, OMSI, as well as through his own company, Educational Recreational Adventures, for the past 20 years.

ADVENTURE A: THE 4T TRAIL, SERVICE AND HIKING  Cancelled

This all day adventure will help young students develop an appreciation for Portland's magnificent greenspaces and transportation system. We will be hiking the 4 T Trail (Train, Trail, Tram and Trolley). During our 4 miles walk, we will be pulling ivy from the side of the trail, freeing native trees and flowers to thrive. This hard work will also present us with opportunities to view salamander species that live in this habitat. We'll take Tri-Met to the Max, the Max to the Zoo, the trail to OHSU and the Tram to the Trolley, the Trolly to the TriMet and then back to OES! Only in Portland! Certificates will be awarded upon completion.

ADVENTURE B: SNOW SHOE & IGLOO BUILDING February 10

Get ready to hit the trail and then go cross-country on snowshoes. We'll play in the snow, track wildllife and build an igloo using a special ilgoo building tool. Using our GPS, we'll record our secret location on our GPS so that students will be able to take their parents to see it at a later date!

ADVENTURE E: ARCHERY February 20  Cancelled

Learn to shoot a bow like Robin Hood! Using traditional recurve and longbows and "instinctive shooting" techniques, young archers will develop hand-eye coordination and learn to place an arrow wherever they focus their eyes. ERA will supply all gear including rain shelters and if necessary an in-door range. The class will be off campus.and culminate in a friendly competition. Join us for fun and skill-building!

ADVENTURE F: HIKING  March 26

Let's head to the Rooster Rock trail in the Table Rock Wilderness near the Mollala River. Along the way, we will stop to view spectacular lava columns along the Molalla. The hike will take us through a beautiful forests to a mountain meadow with spectacular views.  With luck, we will have a magnificent view of Mt. Jefferson to the south and the Fremont Brdge/Portland to the North.

BEGINNING TAP DANCE

Tap dancing is fun!   Come join Eliizabeth Brown, US Dance instructor and Wizard of Oz choreographer, as she sets young toes a tappin'.  This class explores tempo, rhythm, balance, and intensity.   Participants will work on patterns and coordination.  Students will learn the anatomy of a tap shoe, basic steps, and a brief history of this truly American art form.

Attire: Students must provide own shoes, and dress in clothes that are easy to move in.  Hard soled shoes are required. Tap shoes are preferred.

CIRCUS ACROBATICS 

Come play in the virtuosic world of clowning, acrobatics, tumbling and partner balancing. Work on developing coordination skills, kinesthetic awareness, creative movement and group performance using traditional circus equipment such as stilts, balance boards, hoola hoops and juggling gear. Unlock the potential of the creative circus in a safe and joyous way.

Martina Oskarsson is the founder of VAGABOOM!, a non-profit organization with a focus on art and physical education. She has an extensive background in circus arts, gymnastics and yoga. Her goal is to inspire children to explore their creative and artistic potential by offering a unique learning environment.

FENCING

Students will learn the basics of fencing, including the various weapons, fencing styles, techniques, and strategies. Classes emphasize exercises and drills, as well as actual bouts, with concentration mostly on saber. Fencing is a safe and wonderful sport for Lower School students. It is also a great sport for both boys and girls. All necessary equipment will be rented from the OES Fencing Club and is included in the class fee. Please wear closed-toe shoes. Both of the following classes are taught at the same level.

Anna Angelova has been teaching fencing classes for several years to OES students, both in classes and in the fencing club. Anna is a former Bulgarian Olympian.

Private lessons and participation in local competitions, in addition to class participation, are encouraged for young fencers wanting to expand their experiences.

GIRLS LACROSSE  Cancelled

This class will introduce girls to the fundamentals of lacrosse. Students will work on throwing, catching, shooting, dodging, and picking up ground balls through fun, non-contact activities and games. Students will leave the class prepared for team play in the older grades. Dress for the weather.

Equipment needed: Goggles, mouthguard, girl's lacrosse stick, proper footwear (sneakers or cleats), water bottle.

Rebecca Drylie-Perkins was a High School All American and the leading scorer in New Jersey her senior year of highschool. She played at Shawnee which was a nationally ranked team all 3 years she started on Varsity. She continued to play Division One Lacrosse at Drexel University, also being a 3 year starter and team scoring leader. Rebecca will be joining OES in the Spring Season as the JV Head Lacrosse Coach.

LACROSSE TEAMS FOR GIRLS AND BOYS : 3rd-4th Team and 5th-6th Team

Both boys and girls from beginners to advanced skill levels are invited to join the team! Students will play games against other schools in the region–sometimes traveling as far as Hood River–developing and gaining new skills including catching, throwing, shooting, dodging, and picking up ground balls. Working as a team, cooperation, and a healthy respect for rules and each other are a must in this sport! A parent meeting will be scheduled prior to the start to provide additional information. Schedules will not be completed until March 15 but based on previous years games and practices, some weeks are scheduled Tues, Wed, Thurs and the next week Monday, Wednesday. It is understood that most students will be unable to make all practices and games, since games and practices are generally scheduled 5 days a week.

Splinter Wrenn earned a BA from University of Denver and an MSHA from the University of Colorado. He has been coaching lacrosse and offering various classes to OES students since 1997. He is also a MS Counselor for PPS.  He will be coaching the boys team.

Tucker Pierson is in her second year as the girls varsity lacrosse coach at OES. She coached eight years at Lincoln High School and is a high school English and social studies teacher in the Portland Public School District since 1997. Tucker has a BA from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York and an MA in teaching from Lewis & Clark College. She will be coaching the girls team.

Equipment and attire:

Boys: helmet, stick, mouthpiece, gloves, shoulder and arm pads, protective cup, athletic shoes with molded cleats, and water bottle (school has some loaner packages available for $10 term).

Girls: goggles, mouthguard, girl's lacrosse stick, proper footwear (sneakers or cleats), water bottle.

SOCCER STARS 

Join our after school soccer classes and show me your abilities! Mr. Corris will teach you all kinds of fun soccer-related skills!  You’ll have a great time learning how to dribble, pass, kick, and other basic concepts, and we’ll even play a few fun-filled games together!

Equipment needed: Size 4 soccer ball, shoes with cleats, shin guards, water bottle, appropriate rainy weather clothing and clothing to move in (sweats, shorts, etc)

Scott Corris has taught at OES since 1990 and is currently teaching physical education for the Lower School. He earned his BS from Northland College.

WUSHU

Chinese Wushu (a new name for Kung Fu) is a healthy and safe physical exercise that requires mental concentration. It is based on the principles of self-defense, self-discipline and self-confidence. There is no sparring, fighting or student-to-student contact. This class is excellent for both girls and boys.

Master Shaowen Yu is the founder of the U.S. Wushu Center and a former member of the Beijing Wushu Team in China. Master Yu and his instructors have many years of training and experience and are world champions.
