BALLOON MANIA  NEW CLASS!

Have fun with inflatable creations!   Make your own balloon animals!  This class will introduce students to the joys of balloon twisting.  Students will twist and tie their way to an inflated menagerie.  Students will master the basic dog as well as more advanced, multi- balloon creations. 

1st-3rd Grade

BEGINNING KNITTING  NEW CLASS!

From finger-knit projects to needle knit toys, students will create with yarn and other materials each week in hands on craft projects. This class is recommended to people with no experience to beginners. Finger knit some finger puppets and then progress to a garter stitch coin purse.  If you have familiarity with knitting with needles, you can start out with the coin purse and then proceed to a wash cloth using different stitch techniques or fingerless gloves still using garter stitch. Class B will include some fun new projects, that don't use knitting needles.

Instructor Dawn Swanson is an OES parent and has been knitting for over five years. She has taught various friends to knit and received first place at the Washington County Fair this past summer for a child's vest.

CRAFTY CLASS

This class is tailored to meet each student's interests.  Small quilts, pillows, stuffed animals and appliqued bags are a few of the projects students have taken on this year.  Ideas and inspiration provided at the beginning of each session to help get sewers started, so they can create their special project.

CREATIVE DRAMATICS

Explore the world of Creative Dramatics! As we journey through dramatic arts, improvisation, and scene work, we will shape and mold our stories into a great performance for family and friends. In order for this to be successful, students need to come to class ready to focus and concentrate on the fundamentals of acting, as well as enjoy theater work. Memorization and collaboration are required. Expectations are high, but what could be more fun? Come enjoy the movement, imagination and storytelling of theatre with this after school class. Class culminates with a performance the last day of class.

Instructor Natasha Dudley Busick has been teaching drama to students for many years. She was the Educational Director of the San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival. Her third grade students were invited to perform a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a showcase for award- winning students at the State Capitol in Sacramento. She uses drama as part of her curriculum each year at OES as a fifth grade teacher. Each class performs a play of Shakespeare’s.

DIGITAL ANIMATION AND GAME DESIGN WORKSHOP- CANCELLED

Do you want to explore the digital art of animation and game design? Do you have ideas that would make a fun and challenging game? Have you played around with Scratch or GameStar Mechanic and would like to learn more about the programming scripts? Whether you are new or old to using digital tools for animation and game design, this workshop offers the time, space, and creative energy to extend your thinking. We will also explore old-school animation and game design using flip books and board games. Together we will build our knowledge of systems and design to create original and remixed projects that reflect our own personality and style.

Jennifer Shotts is a 4th grade teacher at OES. She has also taught grades 3 through 5 at the Trillium Charter School. She has additional experience teaching engineering and computer programming camps and directing a reading tutor program. She is also a teacher consultant for the National Writing Project.

FAIRY TALE FOODS   NEW CLASS!

Experience the tasty land of make believe! No need to pack a snack for this journey, here the students do the cooking!  We will make gingerbread men, and see if they run.  We will have a porridge tasting, courtesy of The Three Bears, and make curds and whey like Little Miss Muffett.  Each class involves a different fairy tale, fable or nursery rhyme.  Students will increase their practical math and reading skills, while working and problem solving in a team.  This class promises to be fun and delicious!

FILM MAKING A & C

These days you don't need a million dollar budget and a big name star to make a movie; all you need is some basic equipment, a healthy dose of imagination, and a few friends willing to play along. This class is designed to introduce and put into practice the basic elements of filmmaking: script writing, planning, shooting and editing. Students will work collaboratively to produce a short film from the initial idea stage to the final screening, and will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be both in front of and behind the lens. Software: iMovie, Reason, GarageBand. Hardware: Flip cameras, Midi keyboards

FILM MAKING B (Level 2) NEW CLASS!

This class is designed to build on the skills introduced in Filmmaking. Students will be asked to consider more complex ideas of framing, cinematography and storytelling. Planning the story, shooting the footage in an interesting way and effective editing will be the focus of this fun and collaborative class.

FUSED GLASS: Valentines Fun!  NEW CLASS!

Come play with the beautiful asortment of glass pieces and construct your own one-of-a-kind valentines. I will bring out the reds and pinks and let you design several pieces. They will be fused and returned in time for this special day.

Jenny Belote Wells is a Certified Oregon Elementary Teacher and earned her BA in Special Education from Radford University. For five years, Jenny taught Elementary Education in Virginia and Oregon. Since 2001, Jenny has been teaching children and adults the basic skills for making fused glass art, and mosaics at Grace Institute. She recently opened her own glass teaching studio in the Alberta Arts District, Jennifer Wells Design, and sells her work nationally.

FUSED GLASS: Plates & More!

Learn the basic skills of glass fusing as well as many different techniques to make incredible one of a kind pieces. Fusing projects will include fabulous spring keepsakes: wind chimes, sun catchers, jewelry and a fused glass plate. Students will have the opportunity to design, cut, and fuse their work with colorful hues of glass. Join us in these classes to make gorgeous one of a kind art pieces.

IT'S SHOWTIME!

Places everyone! It's time to put on your costume and step onto the stage with this exciting new Theater Arts After School Program! Every action-packed class will consist of a physical and vocal warm-up, theatrical games, and rehearsal of the show we are co-creating together. Although we aim for a magnificent final performance, the rich experiences of this program extend far beyond the stage as we further develop self-confidence, presence, motor and social skills, and creative expression. All classes are tailored to each group’s abilities to help them succeed and shine through play. So get ready to start applauding for all the new stars of this program, because… It’s Showtime! 

Instructor: Noah Fassell graduated from the Dell'Arte School of Physical Theater. He was co-founder of Vagaboom! and has over 15 years of Directing and teaching theater for children and adults.

SOCK MONSTERS AND THE THINGS THEY EAT  NEW CLASS!

Have you always wanted to try and make your own monster or other small animal such as bird, bunny, or dog?  Now is your chance! All you need is a pair of socks and you can create a number of wild creatures.  I will bring the socks and you can bring your creativity. Come for four weeks and put together your very own stuffed creature.

STOP ANIMATION

Learn the art of animation in a collaborative, creative and fun environment. In this class, students will work in groups to create fun action sequences using a variety of 2D and 3D sources. Students will script stories and use cameras to capture footage. Basic movie making will be introduced as students learn to manipulate video editing software. Voiceover work will be done and music making software will be utilized to add levels of complexity to the animations. Software: iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Reason. Hardware: Flip cameras, Midi keyboards
