Lower School Academics

At OES, we believe children learn best through active involvement in a safe and nurturing environment. We view each child as a unique individual with his or her own pattern and timing of growth and development. We have designed a flexible inquiry-based curriculum which provides a conceptual framework allowing children to build on their prior knowledge and experience. Experiences are provided that stimulate learning in all developmental areas—physical, social, emotional, and cognitive. Our goal is to create a child-centered environment that fosters positive self-esteem, critical thinking skills and an enthusiasm for learning.

In addition to classroom teachers, specialists provide instruction in art, Spanish, physical education, music, science, and library research. Learn more about the specialist programs.

General information about the subjects that are taught can be found in the LS Handbook. Day-to-day comments from the teachers, pictures of class activities, and links to educational resources for their curriculum can be found on the class websites that teachers share with the families at the start of each year.
