Our mathematics curriculum reflects the standards
of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. We place a
strong emphasis on the development of mathematical concepts and
understanding. Teachers create an environment that encourages
and supports children as they explore, develop, test, discuss,
and apply their ideas. We encourage children to construct meanings
based on physical experience with a wide variety of manipulatives.
Our curriculum also emphasizes the application of mathematics.
We help children understand that mathematics is a practical, useful
subject, applicable to a wide variety of real world problems.
Counting in meaningful situations, graphing, measuring, and classroom
problem solving are woven into all areas of the curriculum. We
also include a broad range of content beyond basic arithmetic.
Children are introduced informally to such branches of mathematics
as measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability. This approach
helps children see the usefulness of mathematics as well as the
relationship of math to other areas of the curriculum.
We believe this open-ended, active, hands-on approach—as
opposed to a pencil-and-paper, rote practice approach—fits
the natural learning patterns of children, contributes to their
mathematical development, and allows us to meet a range of ability
levels. |
