Children in the early elementary years are in the process of developing attitudes toward nations and groups perceived as “other.” Much research has indicated that exposure to a second language serves as a means of helping children move toward intercultural competence. The awareness of a global community is enhanced when children have the opportunity to experience involvement with another culture through the study of different languages. There is also evidence that early exposure to second languages facilitates the learning of languages in middle and high school as well as enriching skills in puzzling, math and many other areas of thinking. Spanish is taught in Kindergarten through Fifth Grades.
