The land is at a higher elevation than the land nearer the Oregon Coast, ranging from about 1500' to several thousand feet. Compare that with Portland, where much of the land is 150' above sea level or less. If you are at the Columbia or Willamette River in Portland you are only about 35' above the ocean. Even the highest point in Portland, Council Crest, is only about 950' above sea level.
