AASK Reading Program -- Sign-up

Organizer:
Time of year: October through May
Time of day: school hours, mornings
Frequency: once or twice a week
Time commitment: 1 hour per session
Location: Vose Elementary

Job description: Lead volunteer recruits and organizes 10 to 12 other adult volunteers to read with Vose Elementary students in conjunction with the SMART reading program; adult volunteers read with students one to two mornings a week.

The SMART program works with entire classrooms in Kindergarten through 3rd grade at Vose Elementary.  To participate in the SMART program we must be able to sponsor a classroom, which involves 10 to 12 volunteers per week, each week.  OES also needs to provide a leader that can organize our volunteer readers.  We could make a difference in a lot of children's lives if we could sponsor a classroom; there are classrooms that aren't able to be involved because there aren't enough volunteer readers.

AASK (Aardvarks Advocate Skills and Knowledge) is a community-based educational program of OES carried out in an intercultural partnership with Vose Elementary School and Whitford Middle School in the Beaverton School District. SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is an Oregon state-wide not-for-profit reading program that partners with schools that have high populations of children from low income families, as studies show they are less likely to have books in the home. To encourage reading outside the classroom, SMART gives each child 14 new, take-home books—two per month during the course of the program. In addition SMART utilizes volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-3rd grade children in need of literacy support. Every week for seven months, volunteers read aloud with kids to help them gain confidence in their reading ability.
