- This Job Shadow will provide the student with a detailed view of the efforts and roles involved in creating a daily, live, local television program
OUTLINE:
- Your day will begin when you arrive downtown at KOIN Tower to join the "Studio 6" team for their morning meeting. Here you'll hear what the Producers, Reporters, Hosts and Writers are considering for this days show.
Next you'll head out with a Reporter or Host and a Photographer as they acquire video and interviews on today's news topics.
You'll enjoy lunch at one of Downtown Portland's finest restaurants.
Then it's back to the studio where your efforts at retrieving news in the field will be turned into packages for air and you'll be shown how the producers and director take multiple components and bring them together to make a fluid and comprehensive program.
Next you can choose to divide your time between the control room and the studio as the staff takes it ‘live to air’ or be in the field with a reporter as they go ‘live’ into the show.
Your day will end as the “Studio 6" team wraps it up with a review of the days efforts.

95.5 FM The Game Sports Radio
- This job shadow will not only provide your child the ability to see how a radio program is anchored and produced, it will also give them a foot-in-the-door for upcoming internships and job opportunities
OUTLINE:

This Job Shadow will place your child at the 95.5 The Game radio station as radio shows go live to air, starting in mid-afternoon your student will join Host’s John Canzano and John Strong and their producers as they plan out the details of the days show.
Then they’ll head into the studio, where they’ll watch as the staff uses technology to take conversations from in the booth and turn them into a radio show that’s playing out on our Portland airwave.
Next your child will head into the booth itself and see the effort that goes into creating a compelling sports radio conversation that carries on for 4 hours every day as they sit in on The Bold Face Truth and Strong At Night.
As your student is watching and learning, the team at 95.5 The Game will be doing the same; this radio station relies on student reporters during the fall football season and offers internships as well, so your child could garner more than just one day at 95.5 The Game.
SPECIFICATIONS:
- Your child's particular sport interest will be taken into consideration when booking this Job Shadow; i.e. if your student is a huge Blazers fan, then The Game will try to book their visit on a day of a Blazers event. The date will be determined based on mutual agreement with John Strong and the winner. This job shadow is intended for a High School student.
Nike
- This Job Shadow allows your child to learn the ins and outs of Event Marketing at Nike. Step into the processes of strategy that create the Global Success that is Nike.
OUTLINE:
- Spend the day with OES's own Mark Pilkenton, Director of Global Event Marketing. Your student may sit in on meetings where plans are being made to promote Nike gear at an Olympic Trial or they may learn how Nike will integrate their brand and gear into events at the World Cup. All in all, it's a firsthand look at the intricacies of marketing.
It won't stop at Mark's division though; this day will also include a tour of the 193 acre campus, a visit to the employee store, lunch on campus and a look into the future of Nike. Your student will come home telling tales of the future after they visit the "Innovation Kitchen." It's here that Nike's Senior Designers work on concepts of the future.

Wieden + Kennedy
- This Job Shadow takes your child into the creative, empowering world of advertising. Join in the fun as Portland’s famous advertising gurus create their next big campaign for Portland’s famous athletics gear company.
OUTLINE:
- Your Child will take part in the Nike/W+K Experience as they spend a day with Wieden + Kennedy's Global Account Director on Nike. The day will include a building tour of Wieden + Kennedy and all the insider scoop on Nike's advertising. They could be thrown into high-level meetings, watch commercials in the making, experience cutting-edge presentations or make a trip to the exciting Nike headquarters-- the sky's the limit!
SPECIFICATIONS:
- This job shadow is recommended for high school students with a mutually agreed upon date with Eric Gabrielson.
Forest Heights Veterinary Clinic
- This Job Shadow allows your child to see what it takes to care for the animals we love. From routine visits to intricate surgeries, the staff will open up your child's eyes to the dedicated effort it takes to provide medical care to all types of animals
OUTLINE:
- If your child will be attending the surgeries of the day you’ll arrive at the Forest Heights Vet Clinic at 9:00 a.m. There could be as many as 3 procedures planned on the day. They’ll watch as the technicians examine the animal, pre-medicate it, prep, and clip and scrub the surgery site. Then as they observe, the doctor will perform the surgery. Next, they’ll watch as the technicians complete the wrap up and wake up of the animal.
If your child would rather interact with the veterinarian as they help patients in the clinic, then after arriving at 9:00 a.m. they’ll follow the doctor as they work through routine checkups, emergency appointments or vaccinations. They’ll be there for blood or sample draws and get to see how the technicians spot problems from the acquired samples. They’ll listen-in as owners explain their animal’s health issues and as the doctor determines a diagnosis.
SPECIFICATIONS:
- Forest Heights Clinic schedules surgeries on Tuesday and Thursday mornings only. This Job Shadow is intended for students age 8 and up with a mutually agreed upon date between the winner and Pam Kunse, Office Manager. Whether you choose the surgery or the clinic option your day will end around Noon.
Meriwether's
- This Job Shadow not only offers your child the chance to hone their culinary skills with one of Portland's best Chefs, it also takes them to the forefront of the 'Farm to Fork' movement. Join Chef Earl Hook, of Meriwether's Restaurant, for an insider's look into the making of fine cuisine.
OUTLINE:
- Whether your child joins Chef Earl and his team for a day at their Meriwether’s Restaurant or at a family style catered event at the Meriwether’s Skyline Farm, they’ll learn the ins and outs of real farm to fork cooking. The 5 acre Meriwether’s Skyline Farm produces all of its produce for use at the restaurant. Chef Earl not only plans the daily menus he also plans the seasonal crops that the Meriwether farmers will tend and harvest. It’s the ultimate example of sustainable agriculture; Fresh, Flavorful, Nutritional and LOCAL. Your child will meet the farmers, see the crops and then take that knowledge back to the kitchen where the day’s menu will be created. Their experience won’t stop there. Now it’s time to pull it all together and let the cooking begin.
