Geometry
Gabe Edge and Bettina Gregg
A full course of geometry will be offered. Students will cover coordinate geometry, angles, geometry of measure, and much more. The course also will include sections on trigonometry, logic, and the theory of proof. Algebra is an integral part of the course, making Algebra I skills a necessity. Two to three chapters will be covered weekly, resulting in multiple tests each week. Students should expect a couple of hours of homework a day. All students must provide a recommendation from their current math teacher. OES students must receive permission from the Upper School math department. OES will allow successful students (with a C or better) to advance to the next level, but those students will not receive a credit for the course. If you do not attend OES, check with your school concerning high school credit. The textbook is not included in the price; it can be purchased the first day of class for approximately $80.

Basic English Skills: Four Choices
Art Ward
This series of mini-courses will help you work on your writing just as an auto mechanic works on a highperformance engine, and with similar purposes. By learning how the parts of sentences work together and looking at models of powerful sentences, you will learn how to get more speed and mileage out of your sentences: speed because your sentences will communicate more quickly and powerfully; mileage because your readers will be more willing to keep reading your prose until you’ve said everything you have to say. Although the modules can be taken separately, a good command of the terms used in traditional English grammar is assumed for students entering modules II, III, and IV.

I. Grammatical Definitions and Usage Rules
Can you imagine a team of mechanics trying to rebuild an engine if they couldn’t agree on what to call the parts? Recognizing parts of speech, sentence elements, types of phrases, clauses, and sentences gives you a shared vocabulary for analyzing how sentences do their job. You will begin to work with the sentence structures most frequently used in good English prose. At the same time, you begin to learn the most important rules that govern how you use these structures. The goal here is to recognize and correct errors in your own drafts. As the old saying goes, “There are no great writers. There are great rewriters.”
June 30–July 11

II. Building Better Sentences
This module emphasizes practice in generating more complex and efficient English sentences, starting from the simplest “kernel” sentences. Sentencecombining training works quickly to help you construct sentences that can handle the subtleties of analytical writing in fields such as history and literature. At the end of this second module you should have a large repertoire of sentence structures that you can use with full control.
July 14–18
9:00–12:00
Grade 9–12
Cost: $175

III. Building Better Paragraphs
Paragraphing divides a complex argument or explanation into smaller pieces to make it easier for the reader to digest. Every paragraph should make a unique contribution to the clarity or persuasiveness of a discussion; furthermore, every sentence in the paragraph should support that unique contribution. Finally, the paragraphs should come in a sequence that leads readers smoothly through your overall argument. In this module, you will learn how to build and use paragraphs that have all these qualities, how to make smooth transitions between paragraphs, and how to recognize and fix common paragraphing problems.

Grade 9–12

IV. Dealing With the New SAT Writing Section
One of the most shocking aspects of the new SAT Writing Section is that it correlates closely with basic writing errors and improvements of high school students. In other words, preparing for it might not only help you get into college, but also help you accomplish something once you get there. The purpose of this workshop will be twofold:
• To identify and reinforce the most useful concepts and practices emphasized by the test.
• To familiarize students so thoroughly with the test format that it does not itself become a source of distraction or error.
