The boarding program at Oregon Episcopal School allows students from throughout the nation and the world to study in an atmosphere of academic excellence while experiencing exciting outdoor pursuits in the Pacific Northwest and enjoying the vibrant cultural scene of Portland, Oregon.

Academics
Students choose to board at OES so they can be challenged academically and work with dedicated faculty. The wide array of offerings includes:

  • Playwriting course in which students write and direct original plays. Several one-act plays are selected for full production.
  • Seminar-style courses are offered in philosophy and in all the world’s major religions.
  • Studio arts that include ceramic sculptures and pots along with painting, photography and other visual arts.
  • Rich performing arts program provides opportunities to play music and act in plays.
  • Mandarin, Spanish, French, and Japanese, with opportunities for immersion experience in all.

Research
Students work on their own projects in many classes, delving deeply into an area of expertise. These include:

  • Research-based science program in which students work closely with faculty and professional mentors on original research and present their findings in national and international competitions.
  • Humanities program that emphasizes historical research with original documents, and Literary Journalism Project in which students interview people in the community and write a full-length magazine article.
  • Math and technology courses include advanced mathematics, engineering, computer science, digital simulations, and electronic music.

Athletics

  • Each student at OES can participate on sports teams under the school’s no-cut policy. While varsity teams often  win league and state titles in a league that includes similar-size schools, junior varsity teams give every student the chance to learn how to play, enjoy friendly competition, and keep physically fit.
  • The campus hosts a fencing salon where students train with a coach who is a three-time world champion. Because of the school’s tradition of fencing, teachers understand the demands of tournaments in the fencing world.

Dorm Community
Students live in a dormitory with about 60 residents where they take part in a caring, nurturing program that stresses intercultural understanding and personal responsibility. It includes the following features:

  •  Experienced dorm parents and staff provide mature oversight and help students learn to make good choices with their time and lives.
  • Each student takes on responsibility for making the dorms a safe and welcoming place for students from many varied backgrounds.
  • It is a short bus ride to downtown Portland from the safe, leafy OES campus.

Outdoor Adventure and City Lights
The outdoors program takes dorm residents and day students on outings to beaches and mountains and rivers of Oregon. Activities that are offered include:

  • Beach getaways and sea kayaking on the Oregon Coast
  • Backpacking, skiing, and snowboarding in the Cascade Range.
  • Rock climbing and whitewater rafting in central Oregon.
  • Wind surfing in the Columbia Gorge.

On weekends, students living in the dorms can explore Portland’s arts culture, including:

  • Plays
  • Museums
  • Galleries
  • Concerts
  • Sporting events

Imagine Yourself
Students come live and study at OES to be in a community that values intellectual curiosity, intercultural communication, and personal expression:

  • The low student-teacher ratio and casual atmosphere foster important mentoring relationships between students and faculty members, who often keep in touch throughout college and adulthood.
  • Students who reside on campus make lifelong friends among the other dorm residents, including students from 13 nations, as well as among day students from Portland.
  • Whether they are organizing a homemade video festival, conducting a funeral for a pet octopus, or entertaining each other with songs and poetry, the ethic of OES is to be yourself and share your passions and quirkiness with others.
