Financial Matters

Spending Money
The School does not disburse funds for allowance or personal use. All school-related costs will be billed directly to parents on monthly statements.

Bank Accounts
Parents should open a savings or checking account at a local bank. There are several within walking distance of the School. Students do have many expenses while at school: phone calls, haircuts, weekend travel, stamps, clothing, snacks, etc. Parents should help students with their personal finances. We hope parents will consider the appropriate amount somewhere between $15 and $25 a week.

As a college preparatory school we feel that personal finances are an area where students should learn to care for themselves. Strict guidelines should be set as to the amount of money a student receives. At times it may be difficult for parents to determine whether a plea for money is legitimate especially if the request is for a “school-related item.” A quick call to the School will allow you to make the appropriate judgment as to the need of the item requested.

Personal finances are a family issue but we do hope that responsibility will be taken into consideration since one goal of our program is to educate students for the future.

Students should never have large amounts of cash in their rooms. The school cannot be responsible. Theft can be an issue at a boarding school, so students should take care not to expose themselves unduly. All rooms have locks on the doors and a locking drawer in the desk. Additionally, the Business Office has a safe to hold traveler’s checks, cash, passports, and other valuables.

Medical Insurance
All boarding students, including international students, are required to have insurance coverage to assist payment of medical expenses. An information booklet detailing a recommended insurance coverage for international students will be sent to the parents along with contracts. The student’s insurance must be in effect at the time of departure from the student’s home until the student departs from the school at year’s end. A form is provided in the admissions packet for documenting necessary insurance information that makes it possible for the nurse to process medical bills for insurance reimbursement. If a student does not have insurance at the start of school, he or she will automatically be billed for the policy recommended by the school.
